Why sanitize a tanning bed?

Yeah, I know I'm going to catch flak for this question. But hey, knowledge makes for a better salon owner, right? I know you should keep your beds clean after every tanning customer leaves, but how often should you sanitize them? And why? I mean, what kind of crud/diseases/bacteria/etc. can you get from a bed that hasn't been sanitized? Is there some sort of crud that's typical of the tanning industry? I'm just wondering what I should be on the lookout for. Thanks all.

"knowledge makes for a better salon owner"...."I know you should keep your beds clean after every tanning customer leaves, but how often should you sanitize them?"

If it were not for those lines.... <sigh>

You SANITIZE a bed after EVERY use. You do not clean them after each use and sanitize, what, once a week?

I am holding back from saying a lot more.

A bed is sanitized after each and every client. Then, at night before we leave, we soak the bed down in sanitizer and let it sit over night.

Beds should be torn down once a month a cleaned from top to bottom to remove all dust, hairs, etc....

Easy answer. Do you know that the person that just tanned DOESN'T have some skin problem?

Of course you don't. So ASSUME everyone does.

Re: Why sanitize a tanning bed?

Ok, Ok, I got ya. Sanitize after every use. That makes total sense. The whole reason I'm on this board is to get some good advice from you folks who have been in the business. No need to hold back, unless you're going to say something rude. Remember, you were a newbie once too.

So part two of my question is why sanitize? Yeah, I know, to clean and kill all the crud tanners leave behind. But what exactly are you killing? I mean, have any of you had an experience where one tanner passed something on to another tanner because a bed wasn't sanitized?

I'm asking because when I teach my people that you need to sanitize after every tan, I want to be able to tell them why. I don't want to just say, "So nobody gets any diseases." Cause then they're going to ask me what kinds of diseases people get. And then I'm going to have to plead stupidity. Not good for a store owner whose supposed to know what he's doing.

How about this thought.....

Do you REALLY want to lay in someone else's sweat goo??? YUKKK. Sanitize after EVERY person that goes in the bed.
Get past the sweat goo, what about any other bodily fluid from anything even a scratch they might have on themselves.

You Are Kidding right, Does Common sense not come to mind Here. This is typically the type of salon owner that gives EVERYONE a Bad Name. You Probably think not flushing the toilet is ok too.

Re: Why sanitize a tanning bed?

Actually, I'm not kidding, I'm "learning." When you know nothing about the tanning business, it's smart foresight to ask all these questions, especially the ones that seem naive and stupid. I'd rather make a fool of myself by asking, and do it right, than trust my common sense and do it wrong.

Just cruise this board and you'll see, the failure rate in the tanning industry is among the highest in any industry. That's because these folks thought they could open their doors on nothing but common sense, and the profits would come falling from the sky.

I don't plan on failing. If I have to ask people on this board how to turn on a tanning bed, I will. There's no pride in these bones. Just someone who wants to get it right the first time.

If anything, I hope I give the tanning industry a GOOD name when it's all said and done. But hey, thanks for your opinion. I'm sure it will make a difference to somebody on this board.

Lamb, I too was new to this forum a short time ago. I asked several "common sense" questions in my mind - but never verbally. I was too ashamed. So, I asked my disty. Through bouts of hysterical laughter, she told me pretty much everything I needed to know about disinfectant. Honestly, I didn't know that there was seperate cleaner for the eyewear. Now, I do. You take great care and don't ever be afraid to ask a question here. Oh, you may want to do a search for pee in the garbage cans, or "stuff" on towels... all fun reading. ~Elise.
