Showering after your tan loses your Vitamin D??

this is the first time I've seen this. 9 out of 10 times i shower right after i tan. i'm going to have to research this further!

It takes about 24 hours for UV-B-stimulated vitamin D to show up as maximum levels of vitamin D in the blood. Cholesterol-containing body oils are critical to this absorption process.10 Because the body needs 30-60 minutes to absorb these vitamin-D-containing oils, it is best to delay showering or bathing for one hour after exposure. The skin oils in which vitamin D is produced can also be removed by chlorine in swimming pools.

there's a lot of interesting stuff on both of these pages... it seems like the "naked at noon" book has been in production forever! lol

Hmmmm... I thought Vitamin D was produced in the Dermis or Hypodermis, not the Epidermis.

Re: Showering after your tan loses your Vitamin D??

About 10 years ago Krispin was talking about the her book that would be published "very soon" but it looks like it is still "in the development" stage.

I'll look at the Holick paper she references and will send a querry to MH if necessary.

Even "stranger" is this statement:

"Sun exposure at higher latitudes before 10 am or after 2 pm will cause burning from UV-A before it will supply adequate vitamin D from UV-B. This finding may surprise you (you got that right, Krispin), as it did the researchers. It means that sunning must occur between the hours we have been told to avoid. Only sunning between 10 am and 2 pm during summer months (or winter months in southern latitudes) for 20-120 minutes, depending on skin type and color, will form adequate vitamin D before burning occurs.9

Re: Showering after your tan loses your Vitamin D??

Much of the 7-DHC to preD3 conversion takes place in the epidermis. More specifically, the bottom layers of the epidermis is where most of the action takes place. Some conversion does take place in the dermis too, however.

Once UV exposure causes the synthesis of PreD3, PreD3 thermally isomerizes into D3. That is a potential reason to not cool down your skin too much immediately if you want maximum D3 production from the PreD3 that has been formed from UVB exposure.

There is a however, however. And that is that the skin has self-regulation of the amount of vitamin D3 created by continued UV exposure, by the creation of other photoproducts besides D3, from UV synthesized PreD3. From PreD3, lumisterol and tachysterol are created upon continued exposure to UV. Specifically, UVA causes more photodestruction of PreD3 than UVB.

This creates another basis for why indoor tanning is preferable to solar UV for maximum Vitamin D production from UV light.

I think the deal about body oils is a little off base.

Don I had also copied that paragraph and it was why I said there's a lot of interesting stuff on those sites. Just need to weed through what is factual.

Thanks :)

Re: Showering after your tan loses your Vitamin D??

Thanks for sending the paper, Stan. It saved me trying to find mine.

Krispin "misunderstood" the difference between cutaneous UVR-induced vitamin d and topical vitamin d and that is where the thought that showering would "wash away" the vitamin d must have come from (or from Building 51).

[Note: So, Engfant, you can go ahead and take your monthly shower-LOL.]

Which reminds me of one of our clients who always turns off the fans because she doesn't want to "blow away" the rays.
