Low Vitamin D Level in Salon Owner

Anyone else out there who owns or works at a salon with low Vitamin D level? Mine just came in at 31 which is lower than recommended. I had a real hard time finding a Dr. who would order one because they just don't want to believe in it.

I own a tanning salon. Couldn't be low on her right? Of course the recommended levels on the lab results were 25-80 which said I was ok. I know this. I was tanning once a week or every other and taking a dose of 1000 mg Vit D. It's been a tough winter up here in Minnesota.

Re: Low Vitamin D Level in Salon Owner

Not enough. 3 times a week (1/2-3/4 sessions) and forget the pill. That's trash anyway.

Re: Low Vitamin D Level in Salon Owner

a better question would be how many minutes?
weight?
skin color to begin with?
age?

i really don't want to know your age/weight but it does effect your ability to absorb vit d.

Re: Low Vitamin D Level in Salon Owner

The number "31" alone doesn't tell me what I need to know.

Is is 31 ng/ml or 31 nmol/L?

If it is 31 ng/ml, then it is 77.5 nmol/L which is OK. If it is 31 nmol/L, you are down in rickets territory-LOL.

Has anyone tried this test?

Spotting Vitamin-D Deficiency in the Absence of Symptoms: ZRT Laboratory's New, One-of-a-Kind Blood Spot Test Answers the Call for Early Detection of Rapidly Rising D-Deficiencies

PORTLAND, Ore., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Not so long ago, any mention ofVitamin D deficiency brought to mind malnutrition and images of third-worldchildren with rickets and bone deformities. But now the picture has shiftedfrom the developing world to the developed, where Vitamin D deficiencyamong those living in northern hemispheres appears to be rising toastronomical proportions -- by some estimates, affecting up to 75% of thepopulation including the elderly, the obese, dark-skinned people, breastfedbabies, and just about anyone who doesn't get out in the sun much. As thealarm sounds in the medical communities of western nations, and one studyafter another links low Vitamin D to the development of osteoporosis, heartdisease, childhood diabetes, breast cancer, peripheral arterial disease, and even, Alzheimer's, the challenge for physicians is how to spot thedeficiency in time to prevent the disease. Since there are no telltalesymptoms to clue us in to the fact that we may be seriously low in thesunshine vitamin (so-called because our bodies actually convert sunlight toVitamin D by activating a hormone in the skin), the average person has noidea whether they are deficient or not. This is where ZRT's Vitamin D bloodspot test comes in -- the first of its kind using a simple finger stick andjust one or two drops of blood -- to expose a hidden deficiency before itbecomes a problem. The self-sampling test kit makes home collection easyand convenient. Once blood spots have dried (within an hour) on the specialfilter card included in the kit, the sample can be sent back to ZRT Lab foranalysis by regular, pre-paid mail with test results ready 3 to 5 days max. There's nothing to it, except for invaluable information that can be usedto correct Vitamin D deficiency, avoid unwanted health problems, andperhaps, even save your life.
