Doctors Seeing Increased Cases of Bone Disease in Children

UNDATED - Doctors are seeing an increase in kids with a bone disease that had all but been eradicated decades ago.

The disease is rickets. It's a soft bone disease that affects children.

Doctors say it's caused by not enough vitamin D, too little milk, sunshine and exercise.

One Riley doctor says she has seen a lack of vitamin D in kids who are only breast fed.

"Babies that are breast fed are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency because although breast food is the perfect food, it's not the perfect food in terms of vitamin D and so there's recommendations now to give them multi-vitamins in addition to breast milk," said Pediatric Endocrinologist, Dr. Linda DiMeglio

Dr. DiMeglio said she sees one to two cases of rickets every month.

Another problem with vitamin D is the lack of sun especially this time of year. Doctors say it's impossible to get sufficient levels of vitamin D from the sun during our winter months.
