Could Tanning be Healthy? After over a million skin cancer cases in the U-S, researchers are searching for a "safe tan" to give people the protective benefits of a tan without the hazards. Doctors say tanning can be hazardous to your health whether outside or in a tanning bed, but recently Harvard researchers reported that a tan might be the body's best effort to fend off the known cancerous effects of ultraviolet light. "It's almost like getting a callous on your hand when you do a lot of hard work," said dermatologist Stephen D. Maberry. Doctors say before you toss your sunscreen, there's no such thing as a "safe" tan yet. "One of the things that we see is just an increase in the aging appearance of the skin and we call it photoaging, it actually breaks down elastic tissue in the skin, so it makes you look older," said Maberry. Doctors say for now a tan is protective, but it's not sufficient protection and researchers are still searching for a way to offer safe tans.

Tanning provides vitamin D, vitamin D produces endorphins, endorphins make you happy, happy makes you feel better.

Sunlight may be needed to prime T cells to function in skinThis article explains how the skin reacts to sunlight in a way that improves it's ability to deal with cancer cells. Those with an understanding of science may care to read her research paper "DCs metabolize sunlight-induced vitamin D3 to 'program' T cell attraction to the epidermal chemokine CCL27". however others may prefer to hear her discussing her work at Science News Central it does not take more than a few seconds to register to watch the video.
The point you need to understand is that while having a sufficiently high vitamin D status is going to help protect your body from cancer to protect your skin you need to activate the protections mechanism right where it's needed. As the sun not only makes Vitamin d on your skin but also processess it to the active subtance that does the work, having this occur on your skin is better, more efficient and more effective, than taking a supplement and having to wait for the metabolic product to be processed in the body and then travel out to where it is needed. |
