FW: Release: American Cancer Society says "no UV' message is wrong

FW: Release: American Cancer Society says "no UV' message is wrong

May 30 -- The American Cancer Society and the Canadian Cancer Society broke ranks with dermatology lobbying groups this week, issuing press statements acknowledging that people need some sunlight to make vitamin D.
Succumbing to massive evidence indicating that vitamin D deficiency has reached epidemic levels in North America, and acknowledging that research is at least highly suggestive that vitamin D may play a role in preventing many forms of cancer, the groups are both revisiting their policy statements about sunshine.
"Avoiding the sun at all costs, for most of us, simply doesn't make sense," American Cancer Society deputy chief medical officer Len Lichtenfeld acknowledged in a statement issued Saturday, May 27.
The Canadian Cancer Society issued a similar statement May 25.
Both groups made it clear: They still do not recommend intentional suntanning. But they both acknowledge that sunlight is the major source of vitamin D and that no one knows exactly how much people need. They are calling for expanded research on this topic.
"This is a huge step toward moderation of public health messaging on this topic," Smart Tan vice president Joseph Levy said. "While we can already see the political lines being drawn on this issue, the door is open to the fact that UV light is the major source of vitamin D for most people and that total sun avoidance is unhealthy. That is what the professional indoor tanning industry has been saying all along, and that has been a cornerstone of the Smart Tan message since 1996. We're glad ACS and CCS are catching up."
Both groups were involved in the first North American Conference on UV and Vitamin D held in Toronto in March where the vitamin D community put together a case that can no longer be ignored. Vitamin D has received a massive amount of press coverage this year.
"The consensus: There is still much to learn about how much vitamin D people need for good health, how much might be too much, and -- perhaps most importantly -- the best way to get enough," ACS admitted in its press release.
Perhaps most significant about this revelation is the fact that, for years, the dermatology community's leaders have made strong statements about how simple it is to get vitamin D and that sunshine was not necessary to make vitamin D. Dermatology leaders have quipped that people who want to increase their vitamin D levels should just drink a glass of milk. The ACS and CCS statements now reveal how unfounded those claims were.
