UV, Vitamin D & health Conference

The Canadian Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute of Canada, Institute of Cancer Research of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the American Cancer Society invite you to the North American UV, Vitamin D and Health Scientific Conference in Toronto, March 8, 2006.

Recent media articles have reported on the benefits of unprotected sun exposure for the production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced naturally by the skin when exposed to the sun, or can be taken through vitamin supplements.

Research suggests that adequate levels of vitamin D may protect against bone disease (such as osteoporosis), autoimmune diseases (such as multiple sclerosis) and some types of cancer. This new research is causing confusion about how much protection from the sun is needed for maximum health benefit.

Presentations will be made on the following topics:

health benefits of UV exposure
methods of obtaining vitamin D
health risks of UV exposure
knowledge, attitudes and behaviours around UV exposure

It says the results of the workshop will be available summer of 2006.... would like to take a look at that.
