Fabutan President challenges dermatologists supporting sun exposure cancer claims

TORONTO, Jan. 31 /CNW/ - In an open letter delivered today to Dr. Cheryl
Rosen, National Director of Sun Awareness for the Canadian Dermatology
Association (CDA), Doug McNabb, President of Fabutan Sun Tan Studios,
requested clarification on three specific issues regarding the CDA's message
to avoid the sun because it causes skin cancer.
The indoor tanning industry has been scrutinized by dermatologists in
recent years for their role in the alleged increase in skin cancer. In the
Spring of 2005, Fabutan was challenged by the Canadian Competition Bureau
regarding messages dealing with the benefits of UV exposure. "In preparing
information for the Competition Bureau, I found statistics that claimed no
more people were dying from skin cancer now, than in 1985, despite the public
perception created by dermatologists," said McNabb. He said statistics show
that rates of incidence (new cases) of melanoma in younger age groups are
actually in decline.
McNabb's letter to Dr. Rosen questions the accuracy and clarity of the
CDA's messaging, and asks Dr. Rosen to separate fact from fiction when it
comes to skin cancer. "I think it is reasonable to request some clarification
on the messages promoted by dermatologists," said McNabb.

He came all the way out here to BC for the local hearing trying to ban anyone under 18 from tanning so I'm sure he'll be there.
