There is a direct relationship between UVR exposure and the incidence of prostate cancer. Those in the highest quartile of UVR exposure reduced their RR (relative risk) of developing prostate cancer by 66% when compared to the lowest quartile of UVR exposure and the two other intermediate quartiles also showed significant reduction in comparison to the lowest UVR exposure quartile.

This information comes from a "landmark" article published in the August 25, 2001 issue of "The Lancet" titled "Exposure to ultraviolet radiation: association with susceptibility and age at presentation with prostate cancer" by Luscombe, et al.

The Luscombe article also showed a significant delay in the age of diagnosis between the quartile of lowest UVR exposure and the other three quartiles. [See "Good News! For Men - Part 2" for more information]

Can you imagine what the response would be to the introduction of a new "wonder drug" that promised to reduce the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer by 66%? The demand for this new drug would send the stock price of the company holding the patent through the roof (remember Viagra?)!

The "Good News!" is that a man only need to increase his exposure to UVR in order to reduce his RR (relative risk) of developing this disease!

Since only about 600 men die prematurely each year from non-melanoma skin cancer that can be related to OVEREXPOSURE to UVR while 33,000 men die prematurely each year from prostate cancer that Luscombe, et al, state is related to UNDEREXPOSURE to UVR, it can be seen that 55 men die prematurely due to UNDEREXPOSURE to UVR for every 1 man that dies prematurely because of OVEREXPOSURE to UVR.
ITS A GOOD THING!
