Rep Power: 25 | SanDiegoKid:Welcome to the board, the only horror stories I have relate to NOT doing a nightly backup. At least once a day is indicated and also you should do a Off-Site backup in case of fire or theft. The most common is ZIP - quick, clean and works within the Helios provided Utility.CD-RW is becoming the second most common - larger capacity. One of the features of SolarSoft's SalonNet for multiple salons, is that all locations are backups of each other including the Corporate office, if you have say 5 locations - and it really was not your day - you could lose 4 locations data (not sure now - just an example) your could recover from the one remaining location!!!All the best and again welcome - post often!! |

Rep Power: 24 | we use zip drives, faster then cds,we back up to the hard drive then copy to the zip drive, the zip disk is then taken home, we do it everyday, in the busy times some times 2 times a day! we also do a paper print out of all clients with remaining sessions. A fast easy way to hold you over till the back up is restored. Though this only takes a few min.The back up to the hard drive is a good idea because one day the computer crashed first thing in the morning befor any clients came in and helios data got scrambled (it was a first) The backup disk from the closing night was home. So I used the back up from the closing night that was already on the hard drive. Saved me driving back home to get the zip copy to do a restore. We use 4-5 zip disks and alternate them. The copies of the back ups on the hard drive are the source for all zip back ups so all the zips get all the daily backups on them with in a few days.We keep at least 2 weeks worth of back upsat all times. We use a program to back up with one click all our helios data files and spread sheets from the hard drive to the zip disks. |

Rep Power: 107 | Here a Neon Beach we use a Zip Drive for our back-ups. We do them at the end of each shift, after the daily transactions are completed. We have had absolutely no problem backing up data or restoring that data. |

Rep Power: 24 | check out iomega zip drive web site.....the zip has a problem......"the click of death" the drive haed and missaline and while tring to find the 1st sector on the zip disk it damages the read head for good as well as ny disk you try to view after that. Te have a class action aginst then as well a private action....the deadlne for adding your name to the class action I beleive is over now, I have never had a problem but it looks like iomega is nailedm, look up click of death on the web. Cd burning is slower but maybe safer. You do have the risk of not buring in the right format or not having a burner with "burnright" or "justwrite" can lead to failed burns. We use a 20x cd burner with "justwrite" i think its called, it will correct for interuptions so burns never fail,no buffer underruns or overruns what ever they call it. you can burn and do other things at the same time. It maked buring a joy. sometimes a burn at 20X can have as many as 10 corrections with justwrite. That would have been a number of failed burns. |

Rep Power: 0 | I'm setting up helios and getting ready to select a backup system. Most of the comments here relate to backing up. The other half, of the equation and just as important is restoring. Looks like no one has had problems in restoring from a zip drive, but I have heard that zips have a tendancy to mix up or corrupt data and that CD's are more reliable. (Could this be the Iomega problem raised in this thread?) I like Chipps method of backing up on a Hard Drive, saving to zip drive and finally a hard copy printout. Can't go wrong there! But it sounds like a like a lot of work for a small salon (6 beds). Schoolboy |
