Maybe split, or maybe just single wall units placed above the room walls, on the back walls, higher up, in between 2 rooms to allow air to flow to both rooms. I see a lot of 2 Ton wall units out there. They are cheaper, but I am not sure about the cost to run versus another 5 TON Unit.

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

A 5 ton unit will be cheaper to run and more efficient. The wall units will never shut off. You can add an economizer to the 5 ton unit to bring in outside air when it is not so hot outside.

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

I have seen wall units that can be set to run at certain times. One of the AC guys I had look at the space yesterday told me they are great and less to run than a normal unit. But, I have read/seen/heard both, some say they are and some say they are not. I have built several salons, and always build to spec, but the prices of materials and work have gone up quite a bit, so we were looking for alternatives.

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

This is by far not a solution for more AC, We refitted all of our old fluorescent light fixtures to the new low temp/low energy lamps for about $30 a fixture.

It lowered our Temps in the salon about 3 to 5 degrees which made a decent differance?

Also you might try using a tint on any of your windows to cut down on the sunshine adding heat to your Salon

Good Luck

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

Sue. The last lease i signed the first thing on it was that the ladlord would replace any units. Someone had to have sued them to get that done. It is not fair that you buy something so expensive and if you move you cant take it with you.
Other alternative, finance?
Also second opinion on what the problem is. I have had this happen before and it was always fixable. Are your outside pipes freezing when this happens?

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

I had crack heads steal all the copper out of my ac units at my old salon. The LL said it was my issue and refuse to fix it. (They did the same thing prior to moving into the unit, but I had a clause in my lease that everything would be working before moving in or the lease void...so she was forced to fix it then when she didnt want to) I can't control if crack heads climb on the roof and steal the copper!

One of the many reasons I closed my salon

About 30 days ago I had two 3 ton LG mini-split systems installed at one of my salons. So far they're exceeding expectations. I bought them online and then had my hvac guys install them. Total cost was about $1000 per ton. In my case I didn't want to give up any floor space for air handlers and the space between the drop ceiling and roof deck wouldn't allow for putting the air handlers there. Each system only took about 2 hours to install and they only need a 25amp breaker.

Another benefit to these is I can always take them with me if I relocate.

Re: Air Conditioning Problem

I vent my beds into an area above the drop ceiling. I have an exhaust fan that is temperature controlled to draw that air to the outside when it gets around 90 up there. I have an opening at the other end of the salon to get air in that the exhaust fan removes. It's not ideal but it does help over doing nothing when the salon gets too hot in mid-summer.

Remember, if you exhaust air out you have to get it back or the a/c unit will starve for air and you will lessen the cooling effect of the bed cooling fans.

I will do away with this when we get another a/c unit installed. I am waiting on an electrical upgrade now.
