TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
We bought a new computer. The new system does not provide a serial port.
We went out and bought 2 different kinds. A belkin, and radio shack brand usb to serial converters. We are running Windows XP, and for some reason cannot get the system to work without freezing or crashing. We also have a cash draw, and that seems ok. Just cannot figure out why we are having so many communication issues with the TMAX manger. Help...... |

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
Been there done that my dear, your going to need to go out and actually get a com port installed on your computer. The USB should work cause i had the belkin as well and as soon as i put the com port in.. all worked!! Strange I know but.. tmax is old technology so u need to use old technology.. Good Luck..

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
And it is probably not a standard serial cable
It is probably a null modem cable and that will not work with a usb adaptor Null modem switches a pin in the connector and does not convert through a usb cable

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
Do NOT use a null modem cable. You need to use a straight through cable.
We do have one that we make. I have also used off the shelf USB to RS232 converters. All have worked for me. You may need to see if there are any driver updates fror your USB Bus controller in your computer (you would get these from your PC manufacturer). You can also install a serial card into your computer as suggested. Kevin Barrett ADI Tech Support |

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
Yes Kevin, I went back to radio shack and asked them. They do not offer driver updates for their products, (never heard of that before). I searched the radio shack website with no luck .
Belkin told me as long as there are no driver conflicts that it is probably not their unit, that is the problem. I actually just had to change the communication chip in my manager (the one that communicates with the computer). Is ADI going to make the newer managers with a USB port? CAn I get the converter from you Kevin? Thanks for the help everyone!! |

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
Yes you can get one from us, but that was not my point. You have tried two USB converters with the same results.
Your computer has a contoller on the motherboard that controls the USB ports on your computer. You computer has drivers loaded into it (it came that way) that controls the USB ports. Sometimes you have to upgrade these drivers controlling the USB (called universal serial bus controllers in your system properties) controllers. You get these drivers from the PC manufacturer (not the guys who make the USB to serial converter you are trying to use). Contact your PC manufacturer and see if there are any updated drivers for the Universal Serial Bus controllers on your computer. Kevin Barrett ADI Tech Support |

I have purchased a new computer, I had to get vista premuim , there was no option not to. I have helios. I too am having issues with my usb port non stop. I have the usb converter that came with my tmax manager, I have installed all of the new driver updates and have terrible issues. I have all of the usb ports powered on high. I have usb updates form hp, helios and windows as well as a bios update. Nothing seems to make a difference. They turn off all of the time, I get behind schedule and the computer locks up and does not want to restart. What are my options besides pulling my hair out?

Re: TMAX Manager and serial to USB connectors
Yeah, wipe out the hard drive and install Windows XP. Vista does and will have problems until the first SP update becomes avail.
