Buck booster help

I need a schematic to show an electrician how to wire up a UltraSun Sunbreeze 5000 and a Sunburst 4000 with a buckbooster. We have 4 new beds with buckboosters (Soltron/Jefferson Electric) and the elecrtician has no schematic or idea how to wire them. We cannot find a reliable or qualified electrician locally. They tell us that they can do the job but when the rubber meets the road it is another story.

Re: Buck booster help

There is some information you will need to provide about each bed and the transformers you are using, in order for someone to help.

1. What is the "exact" incoming voltage?
2. What is the required voltage of the bed?
3. What size is your transformer (kva rating)?
4. What is the amp draw or the total KW of the bed(s)?
5. What is the step up/step down configuration of the transformers (12/24 or 16/32)?
You should only use a digital voltage meter to determine "exact" voltage.

With this info, there are a few great minds online that can answer your question.

Re: Buck booster help

Buck boosters are available in several different sizes, the most commonly used in the tanning industry are 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. This number is expressed in KVA (i.e., 0.5KVA).
The size you needs depends on the running amperage of your tanning unit. As a rule of thumb, most 24 through 28 lamp units use a 0.5KVA. Most 30 lamp units and higher use a 1.0KVA. Larger units such as 42 lamps+ units vary between the 1.0KVA and 1.5KVA. Many stand up units and high pressure units require a 2.0KVA buck booster. Always consult your bed manufacturer and ask specifically what size (and how many) KVA buck booster(s) your unit requires.

Many distributors will pre-wire the buck boosters for you. You must provide them with accurate current voltage readings.
Some of the buck boosters need to be wired at the time your beds are installed. This should be done by an electrician.

Re: Buck booster help

Both of these are for 208 incoming voltage. Depending on the transformer you will get 24 or 32 volts of boost. All transformers wire the same way from brand to brand.

First one is single phase and the second is three phase.

FOr the 4000 you will ned a 1.0 KVA booster.

FOr the 5000 you will need a 1.5 KVA booster.

Re: Buck booster help

Ok, here is more clarification:
When we ordered the beds we gave the power and electrical specs of the building to the distributor. Rob at AETan sent the boosters based on the requirements of the beds and the power available at our salon. We have the beds and the boosters. The electrician does not know how they are supposed to be wired. We will contact the distributor in the morning and hopefully we can get them wired.

Re: Buck booster help

OK, The diagrams above tell you how to make the connections. Follow them. Print them out and hand them to your electrician.

Re: Buck booster help

Your incoming voltage may be 208. Or maybe not. It is amazing that even some licensed electricians will tell you that your voltage is 208 or 220 or some other number and then when it gets right down to something as simple as reading it at the breaker box with a inexpensive meter, it is not at all what the licensed electrician said it was.

Some building have 240 incoming volts. If you boost this up 32 volts and power your new beds with 272 volts.... well, it probably won't be pretty. So, just be sure you know, not guess or assume, but KNOW FOR A FACT what you true incoming voltage is.

Brian knows your beds and what KVA transformers are rated to work with them. His diagrams are perfect if you need to boost 24 or 32 volts. And you probably do.

I just don't see where anyone has absolutely confirmed that your incoming voltage is 208. It probably is. Most buildings are. But there are exceptions.

Re: Buck booster help

It is probably 208.

If your voltage is different, I have other diagrams.
