Software Peripherals - tanTALK

I was considering purchasing some USB peripherals to use with our salon software (SunTouch), but find them very unreasonably priced. The items considered were:

digital camera
license scanner
barcode scanner
fingerprint scanner

Seems that any generic, microsoft OS type of device would work the same as the units the sofware providers are making available.

Has anyone used hardware, other than what their software provider has sold or tested with?
