Would a database let you build what you needed to keep up with everything that one would need to run a salon? I don't know anything about a database but been told that you can put what you want into it.......

Yes and no. Yes, a database can, however, you have to be knowledgeable in its structure and design to fulfill what you want it to do. No, in that just having a DB is not enough. You need an application to put data into, change and delete from the database. Microsoft Access can do it. Would take some time but can be done. In fact, if I remember correctly, MS had quite a few freebie applications for Access. Videos and salons were two I remember.

We use outlook express right now but you have to manually keep up with packages. Figured you might could let the database do that for you and could you generate reports on income from each person etc...........

It seems like you're thinking about writing Tanning Salon software using a commercial database program, without knowing "anything about a database"? The vary structure of question should provide the answer. Commercial Tanning Salon software is under $1000 which seems like a reasonable investment, unless you already own a salon that running manually and are looking to acquire a hobby.

I just googled "Free Salon management application" and got 738,000 hits, maybe with a effort you can something. I know you can export your contact list from Outlook Express, so if you can find something you'll be better off than you are now.

Good luck.

Yes, even the technically inept could create a crude data base that would support the basics of tanning salon computing. But like Tommy said, why? There are sooooo many nuances to to retail/service transacting that are supported in canned applications for very little money, considering the time it would take a novice to achieve the same quality. Trust me, buy something like Helios(nothing else, except maybe Sunlync, sorry, I just spammed all over myself). Good luck. Hope this helps.

Helios started out 17 years ago as just a flat database of Client Names and addresses and a little bit more. Now 17 years later it does just about everything a salon owner would need a Customer Management and Point of Sale system to do.

No upfront cost ... just $39.99 per month ... you decide

Andy, I have decided AGAINST Helios because the way the contract is written you could draft my account at will any amount you chose to. That is not a acceptable contract for anyone to sign that had read it in my opinion. You send me a Monthly bill that does NOT have to be drafted with a set amount due each month and I would consider it.
