I was wondering if there were any bar code scanners that work with Helios besides the $400 one that Helios recommends.

Any scanner that connects through you keyboard should work. An inexpensive CCD scanner is all we use as it is only used a few times per day. No need for the more expensive laser scanners.

There is no software involved in supporting a Barcode scanner, it is simply an extension to the Keyboard input regardless if connect via the Keyboard or via a USB port.

Handheld scanners are typically less expensive. Helios has opted for MetroLogic Orbit because it does not have to be held and the scanning face is much larger making it easy to use. One would hope that you use it MANY times a day since all major lotion have UPC codes for scanning. Great for easy of operation and control of inventory and pricing.

You can also consider KeyFob with barcodes for retrieving clients.

You can also consider creating barcodes related to selling services as well as products.

We use the MetroLogic Orbit scanners and Andy is right they sit on the counter and they are bigger and easier to scan then others. These help scanning lotion due to the small bar code on some products.

The Opticon ELT-1100 is the scanner we use in the video stores as well as the salon. I've had the same scanners for probably 5 years with no problems and we use each of these easily 300-400 times per day.

Around $100 from http://www.variantusa.com/opticonc.htm

In the salon the scanner is only used for scanning lotions and a few other things so it is not used nearly as many times as the one's in the video stores.

I thought you were above these kind of games Andy! That $400 scanner is a huge rip-off. Even if someone does want the Orbit it is available all over the internet for $269.

No game ... just confused by your two contradicting statements.

The $399 price is a very standard price for the orbit. The MSRP is higher and it can be found on the internet as well at a higher price as well as lower. Helios frequently has this device on sale at $299.

If it can be had for $269. and the limited margin associated thereto fine. But please do not refer to the Helios price as a ripoff. It is the standard price Helios has choosen just like you set the price on your lotion within your salon. Can they be acquired less expensively thru other market channels, it would not surpise me if they could so are you ripping off your client, I think not.

Anyone who likes the reliability of the Orbit from Metrologic but maybe not the price can look to the Voyager line as well. I typically recommend the MS9520 Voyager to my video store clients. You can either use it handheld or in the provided stand and it is a laser scanner as well. We sell them for $249 but you can probably find them cheaper online as mentioned above.
