Does anyone on the site use XP Home (as opposed to XP Professional) to power Helios as an Operating System? If so, are there any issues with doing so?

Thanks

The biggest thing you need with Pro that is not is Home is the web server. If you use Helios or any other software that has web reporting, you need pro. If you do not plan to use any web reporting, you should be ok with Home. There are other features like better security. But, at least Helios and Salontouch require full rights anyways, so you would not be able to lock it down. Here is a link that lists all the differences between Home and Pro.

Helios V11 has an option to install web reporting where you can open a webpage from the internet and log in and get all the reports you can locally.

I already have an operating web page. Or better yet, can't I get all my reports from my database on my system, or do you have to do web reporting.

Yes, you can get all your reports locally. But, if you decide you wanted to be able to run the reports from your house if you happen to not work that day, then you could. I imagine most places do not use this feature. We have two salons and it comes in handy if you want to see what is going on or order supplies for another store by running an inventory report.

see I don't think I need any of that, and if and when I do I can always upgrade, right?

That may be harder than you think. If you think you ever need pro, you might as well just buy it or plan to pay a full version later on. If you bought your computer from Dell or other big manufacturers, call them and ask about this step up program before it is too late.

What Ever Happened to the Windows XP Pro Step-Up?
If you've been following my Windows XP coverage, you'll recall that I reported on an XP Professional Edition Step-Up product, that would let XP Home users upgrade to Pro on the cheap. But since then, the Step-Up version has been nowhere to be seen, and I've gotten a lot of questions about it. According to Microsoft, the XP Step-Up program is available only with the purchase of a new PC at retail, and is valid for just 30 days after purchase. So customers who buy a new PC with Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed may then buy a copy of Windows XP Professional within 30 days of purchase of their new PC and receive a $75 rebate at point of sale (POS) for those retailers set up to deliver an instant rebate; all other retailers will distribute coupons for the customer to redeem directly from Microsoft. This program is being offered until February 28, 2002 in the US only.

Please don't take this as any offense, but why don't you just rent a billboard and post your sales up there...it is just about as secure...

Any hacker worth their salt can easily circumvent Windoze security...I know this because it's been done to me...and by a person I didn't even consider very bright. They learned how to do it on the web...go figure...
