Is it possible to run Helios version 11 within the XP Pro environment from a limited account? What modifications would be necessary to folder permissions for this to be possible. Can't allow admin account open on network for daily business.
Thanks in advance, Yvette |

I am currenly testing this setup and has (thus far) proven an acceptable solution:
This works under Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1. I have not tested it with Windows 2000 but the principle should be the same...actually it may be easier to do under Windows 2000 because of easier access to user account settings. 1- created an Admin account to be used at the frontdesk station called "Frontdesk". 2- Installed Helios and the dongle under this new account. 3- Configured everything within Helios as far as system settings. 4- Logged off and back in within the Administrator account, then went to control panel -> user accounts -> and changed "Front Desk" account to limited account. 5- Now I added "Front Desk" account to the permissions of the Helios application folder as "full control". 6- Then, I edited the registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Helios, and added "Front Desk" account to have "full control". One needs to be very careful about editing the registry, backing up the registry before attempting changes is not a bad idea. Close registry editor. 7- Restart PC and login thru "Front Desk", start Helios and you should be all set to go, without problems. |

Above description is on the money ... you set premissions by Right Clicking on the Helios folder as described above in step 6 ... you could set "Everyone" rather than a User if you are going to have multiple Limited Users.
You may also what to set Everyone to have full control in the Security tab of the Sharing options (need to remove Simple Sharing first) of the Data Folder within Helios11 Now that Helios records the Registry entries in Local Machine rather than Current User this is a WHOLE lot simplier. Initially set up the user that will become a limited user as an Administrator ... do the install, mapping of shared data folder (if on a LAN), setting premissions as described above, etc ... when all is done then change the Account Type to Limited (make sure you do still have an Administrator User that you can log is as). This really limits then things they can do on your computer outside of their data folder and the Helios Data folder. I also suggest you set password on all accounts ... even if it is really simple ... like "tan" and include a hint like "the password is tan" ... if you are working on a LAN ... with XP Pro you will find this desirable and things like scheduled task that could and should be used for backups will require a password to run. Hope this helps .... _________________ Andy Thompson Authorized HELIOS Independent Consultant Office: 877-777-6717 CELL: 317-529-0041 andy@myatso.com[ This Message was edited by: Andy @ MyATSO.ca on 2004-07-07 07:43 ] |
