Their timer/dongle server using TCP/IP to communicate between the Helios POS and the machine with the timer/dongle server running. The firewall ( software assuming ) is blocking the port that they are using. Contact Helios and see what the port is so that you can open it up. Another suggestion is not to use a software firewall but buy a hardware firewall to protect yourself from the outsite. Right now ( by using the software firewall ) you are protecting the 1 computer from everything else. How are you connected to the internet? | |

Rep Power: 23 | Sonshinestans, In order to properly protect your internal network from an external intruder (Internet Hacker), you should look at implementing the following: 1. Look at obtaining a broadband internet connection (i.e. DirectPC Sat, DSL, or Cable modem) for your salon. If you have a dial-up connection you are most like paying between $12-$30 a month for internet access. Most broadband dedicated Internet connections are coming into the $29-$39 per month rates. If you only have one PC then dial is cheaper if you don't mind busy signals. As you add additional PC's that need internet connections you can see where the cost savings begin by having a network with only (1) dedicated Internet connection serving many PC's. 2. Purchase a 4-5 port high Speed Ethernet Network switch that supports at least 10/100Mbps connections if not the recommended 10/100/1000Mbps connections. 3. Purchase a hardware firewall such as the Nortel Networks Contivity 600 or at maybe a less expensive Cisco PIX firewall product. Spend a little money to have a qualified engineer set the unit up, it will save on time, money, headaches, and profanity.. If all you require is outbound internet for file transfer or web browsing, it should take about an hour to set it up and fully protect your network. 4. You will connect all internal PC's, the new firewall, and the Cable or DSL modem to the switch. And you will have created an effective barrier between your internal salon network and the internet. As you expand your salon (and we all want that to happen), you can simply upgrade you network switch to allow for the required number of additional ports. We have this type of setup in our salon. I have managed to use the setup for remote Helios support when one of our clerks has an issue, and I use it to transfer our Helios database to my home unit to run nightly reports. We can even have a clerk print to an off-site printer via the internet when I'm not available locally and I need a report for our CPA. Just a few ideas... |

Rep Power: 0 | Many Cable/DSL routers have a serial port on them to use with an external modem and a dialup account. You can simplify your network, use the cheaper dialup account and get the protection of a firewall. I have used SMC and Asante products, but most manufactures have a product with this option. |
