Well, after I figured out that I already had the thumbprint scanner drivers.....(on my v9.4 update)they installed like a piece of cake. I was having alot of fun playing with them (I know I'm kinda geeky about this tech stuff). They seemed to be more well recieved by the clients than I anticipated. I figured I would get some negative comments but most people are impressed by the improvement. Pretty easy and pretty neat!!!!!
We have already, in just 3-4 days of having them, caught 2 people trying to tan under someone elses account, and they both bought packages in their own name. Guess they have almost paid for themselves already. |

I really want to incorporate the thumbprint scanner into my salon...not only for the security of customers accounts but also becuase I think that it really looks cool and it seems like it would make things run a litte smoother....I think after customers try this thing out it will be the talk of the town...nobody has anything like this around us...it will get people talking!!
Teresa keep us updated on the progress of this system in your salons..... Christina |

They are relly neat Christina.......I'm really sure why we never had them years ago. So far we have been using them about a week and had virtually no problems. People are impressed with the advanced technology and seem to have more respect for us as they go through the motions of registering their fingerprint. The exact opposite of the flood of negativity I expected.
(Unfortunately, after 911 I think any and all security features added by/for anything is welcomed now.) |

I am happy to hear that is going well for you...I completely agree with the whole security thing...it is better safe than sorry...plus it will really help in those rare cases of some customers saying I never came that many times I should have this many tans left...it is kinda like a sign-in sheet..just a lot better!!

Helios have built in a Proprietary code (on the white label on the back of each device ... unique to that unit) that is authenticated by the Helios Software.
The device itself is in fact readily available from Computer Distributor ... CAUTION ... without the above Proprietary code that Helios add to the device it will not work with Helios software. Thus the fee of $399 per unit for an item that has a wholesale cost of less than $100. Unless you are purchasing many units, you must acquire them from Helios. The option involves a Software Developers Kit from the Manufacturer of the device and significant knowledge on using same. |

Andy,
Thanks for the information regarding the Helios Proprietary code pertaining to the thumbprint scanner. I would hope that someday a "software developer" would see that providing open programming for hardware devices as a benefit towards customer loyalty where it isn’t directly required to protect proprietary software coding. If would seem to me that this is simply a ploy on ETS's part to control the acquisition of thumbprint hardware and not protecting any part of the Helios product from being illegally used. |

Tony has described it to me as the means of acquiring return on the investment of time required to create the interface within Helios to support the device.
Based on current serial numbers attached by Helios it would appear that Helios have now sold over 1,000 of the devices. Based on non preferred wholesale pricing of the device of $100. with a mark up of 100% thus logical selling price of $199. that leaves $200. times 1,000+ units. Would think that $200,000. should have covered the additional development cost by now. and Kent just to clarify, this pricing was in place prior to ETS acquiring control of Helios in the summer of 2001. |
