You are not missing anything ... your concerns are valid and warranted.

The only security you have, is that which you physically put in place.

Regarding other steps that you can take to protect yourself ... in order not to make this issue worse, may I suggest that anyone wishing to discuss this topic further should call me regarding it rather posting additional info here that could further enhance the challenge.
