Ok, so I signed the maintenance agreement and am on my way to having $34.99 less in my bank account each month.
During that phone call I asked what files I would have to copy off of my old computer and Version 8 (clients, salescodes, etc.) so I can start to make my plan here. The Helios sales rep said I would just have to install V8 on the new computer and then run the conversion. I had to remind him that if I could put V8 on a new computer I wouldn't have to get V9. So then he said just call tech support when you're at that poiont in the installation. I asked why I can't just talk to them now so I can be prepared. Well they can't help before my agreement is actually in place. God forbid they should actually encourage me to want to do this. The guy on the phone was so rude and full of attitude that when I thanked him for his help he didn't even thank me for my purchase! Oh, that's right, I didn't really make a purchase because the software is FREE. Anyway, thanks for the vent . . . I need to know what files to have copies of right before I do this. I'm already starting to think the worst, that is that since I can't run the conversion I'll have to manually input the info into the accumulators for packages, etc. Please say it isn't so! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get any additional questions answered here during the week so I'm ready when the weekend comes. Thanks, Tammy |

Well Tammy, the short answer - it isn't so!!
The Sales Rep at Helios did not give you bad information he just did not give it all - thus the referral to Tech Support. Who knows why they could not answer your questions now. YES, you will have to install V8 on your new computer. BUT you will NOT have to activate it - the part that Helios would not have done - thus the need to upgrade to V9. Not sure if you want an explanation of why this is necessary, keeping it short - there are entries created in the Windows registry that V9 needs related to V8 to convert your data into V9 - more detail available if you want it. OK, so install V8 on the new computer. You should also check with Tech Support to ensure that the version of V8 you are running is compatible with the convert program from V8 to V9. If you are running the latest V8 (8.1.39 or 8.2 - no need it is OK). Install V9 (lastest version supplied by Helios) on your computer. You can do a trial run of the conversion if you wish, to ensure yourself that all will operate properly then the time comes for the true conversion, a second conversion will overwrite the old files. Backup your data on your old system (standard backup - which is the 4 databases in the Data Directory within C:Program FilesHelios8) this extra detail provided to answer the question what files you need to transfer - a standard backup will do it (with a couple of extra things to consider - later on that). OK, now you can Restore that backup onto the new system - again you are still working with V8 Utilities. If it is still Demo Data in V8 on the new system the password will still be "demo". Now go into V9 Utilities and run the "Convert" - it should only take a few minutes. It is not uncommon to get a few (very few) errors and also sometimes no errors at all. Now, those extra things to consider: Make an extra backup before you start this process. Good idea to do a Compact and Repair before converting - reduces the likelihood of errors If you take client Pictures you will also have to copy the Pictures Directory. If you have customized the Release Form and/or any Contract Forms you will have to make those changes in V9 as well. Hope this helps _________________ Andy Thompson ACT Business Solutions Toll-Free 877-777-6717 andy@atso.ca ACT Help Center [ This Message was edited by: Andy @ ATSO.ca on 2002-08-05 17:21 ] |
