We are having a zip drive installed tomorrow. Do you back up the entire helios files, or just certain files? I had been backing up the entire thing just to be safe, but was wondering which files are needed?

terryberry,

The only files that you HAVE to back up in Helios are the data files. Those files are usually located in a folder named DATA underneath the Helios9 folder.

The exceptions to this would be if you have customized any Release Forms and/or Contracts. Those would be stored in the Helios9 folder.

It's not a bad idea to back up the entire Helios9 folder since the great majority of the size of the folder is taken up by the files in the DATA folder anyway.

Helios has a utility to back up the data files as well as repair the data files and also restore the data files.
No need to back up the program files at all, they will be useless because helios plants files all thought windows dir. as well, and will not work without them.
the files the "utilily" backs up are automaticaly selected and combined into one, yes one backup file it easy and simple.
If you need to restore these same file is all you need.
backup every day!
also do a paper print out of "client status" every day, it will save you incase you system goes down, you can pull out the paper file and tan people right fron that untill yours system is repaired or replaced.

Your client files are your whole business!
Protect them!
Zip drives are easy but if you look around on the web about "click of death" you will see zips do have there problems....we use zip drives and we also use cd burners.

How can you print off client status every night? I have 6000 clients in my database, this would be impossible???

the client status report only prints out the clients that you owe services to. it can still be a really large report, depending on how many active clients you have.

also, i don't recommend using the helios backup program. helios is, in fact, discontinuing that feature in future versions from what i understand.

i would just use windows explorer if i was you.

Hi Gary! Why would you not recommend using the Helios backup program? Just wondering...I only started using it recently at the suggestion of my "computer guy". I know some about computers but not everything, help!!!

It really doesn't take too long to print out a status report. I just finish up other things while it is printing. My computer has really been acting up lately, so to me it is security. Anyone know what would cause a computer to keep freezing up? It's only a year old. My computer guy just added more memory and ram when he installed the zip drive. He couldn't find anything wrong with it, and then today it did it again. It's driving me nuts!!

I agree with Stacey---it would take ssssoooo long. I could never print client status reports every night, I have 14,000 clients at one salon, 7,000 at the second and 2100 at the newest salon. I back up using helios backup onto a zip drive and alternate disks every other night.

you have 14000 active clients
you need to put an exp. date on packages.
you active list will be much smaller then your client list

terry do you have usb devices on that thing,
I have problems with my zip drive and camera they dont like each other, they are usb and cant be plugged in at the same time.
Strip down the devices to a few as you can.
some usb mice make win 98 crash when you boot up as well i found.
you need to keep your computer as free of extra programs and devises they all seem to conflict from time to time.
Your modem when online can temp. freeze you up to...if the modem is wating for data...the web is laged and stalling.
run scandisk every few weeks if you have a 98 system and run defrag once a month.
windows xp pro is much much more stable then older windows version.
