Well, I've been trying to install Helios 9.4 on Win XP. Here are the results I get, please note that your results will vary.
Windows XP Professional, the installation crashes and aborts without finnishing the installation. Windows XP Home, the installation errors on DPUtils.dll, BUT continues on and finishes the installation. Helios seems to run, but I have not put it in a production enviroment. I am confused to why the two XP versions have different results, as they should react similarly. I'd love to hear of some people who have been running XP and Helios 9.4, have you had any luck? |

Thanks for the update!
The fact that helios has yet to respond to this topic on line here could tell the whole story. It would be ever so kind if they would respond. Did you do an update to have windows xp running or was it a new computer with fresh windows xp installed? |

Chippp,
Positive! Also claims that it "only" works with the pro version and not the home version are absurd without an explanation. Both kernals are very similar, and Helios almost certainly does not use any features in the pro version that are not in the home version (smp, file encryption, etc...). As I said, the problem I'm having is with the installer, not Helios itself. XP has been extremely compatible with all of the software I've seen, so I don't forsee problems using Helios on XP once you get it installed. The machine I installed on was my old laptop (originally had Win98 on it). I did a clean install, loaded my development enviroment and then loaded Helios. My XP Pro versions are all fresh installs, so there could be something in the Salon Net packages that helped the Helios installation along. I'll give that a try and see what I get. Your right about Helios being forthcomming, though. If it doesn't work on any version of XP, it would be nice to know why, and not just get blown off with obviously incorrect information. When I find some spare time, I'll try a few different loading schemes and see if I can't come up with a procedure for getting Helios loaded on XP. |

I am locked out of helios "date problem"
Any way They can't get me running and told me they need to write ME a software patch...they don't know when it will be ready! I have been locked out from Wen. 28 around lunch, I hope it dosent take days to write it and then get it to me....this is really scary!!!! I could never understand how this could come to this days with out point of sale software! This is a nightmare. They told me to upgrade from win98 to windows xp pro NOW! That helios works on xp pro. Now I have to play the waiting game. I hope no one else has to experience this, I may change my software, this is unacceptable. |

I received the post below from a friend that is trying to upgrade to XP on his home computer. I don't know if it's applicable here, but thought I'd share his difficulty. I will not be using XP, so I have no personal experience with it.
--------------------------- From my Friend: I want to warn you to be careful when you get involved with Microsoft Windows XP or XP Pro. Also is included the family of Office XP. They all require a new thing called "activation". Activation is not the same as registration. If you get software with a new machine (OEM), you can only install that software on one machine. Any Operating System you buy (Win XP or Win XP Pro) or obtain either OEM or Retail, you can only install on one machine. They tell me, although I have yet to accomplish it, that a Retail version of Microsoft Office can be installed on as many as two machines as long as you own them both. The OEM version can only be installed on one machine. Be very careful when you buy a XP Upgrade. You can only upgrade Windows 98 and ME, and with Ms Office 2002 XP you must have Office 97 or higher to upgrade. The upgrades cost approaches $200 ea, and it would really be a bummer to buy a package of software, open it and the computer wouldn't take it, and the store wouldn't take it back because the package is broken. Also all programs have to be capable of running on Windows 2000 to work on XP or XP Pro, so be prepared to have Win XP (Pro) to reject some of your favorite (mine was my Norton AntiVirus) software. I have spent the last week learning, cussing and discussing XP, both as an operating system and office software. This new activation is going to be the pits. ___________________________________ |

Well I think I fixed it.
I had to roll back to helios 9.1.5 That unlocked helios. Then I unpacked the backup data file In that one file is smaller files. I installed all but the transaction files and helios was up and running again. I will test it over the next few days . Live and learn. The transaction file got corrupted it seems, it was all messed up. I will be testing over the next few days. Boy I don't want that to happen again. |

That seems to have worked but it is brutal....it is like archiving all your transactions files off the system.
It keeps your sales codes and your helios settings as well as your client files. I also did an install in place of windows 98 before trying the helios patch job. Windows was slugish so it speeded things up, mostly the bootup. Windows may have been part of the helios problem...don't really know.Helios seem to share some windows data stuff, see the ODBC Data Source Administrator in windows control panel. |

Actually if you look back at the begining of this forum, I informed all of you that Helios would work with XP Pro.
The difference between XP Home and XP Pro is the components and files. Helios needs certain shared files in order to run, which means if they aren't on XP Home.. then it isn't going to work. It is safe to say that it does work with XP PRO.. I know from experience |
