Again it depends on where your at. My people count has been really bad. I expected it to be just by watching other retail. For the past few months you can drive by Lowes and see that they have about 2 emplowees per 1 customer. and they have no comp here. The drive thru laid off 1 per shift. | |

Rep Power: 21 | Re: Doom and Gloom These forums are valuable, however it is important to know that most people come here because they are struggling. The end result is so many people preaching doom and gloom. No one wants to admit that they are at fault when their business is struggling. Regulations change, consumers change, economy changes, competition changes. As long as you are making changes to keep pace with or to be in front of changes that can change how you should be doing business you will be successful. It is a tendency to keep waiting hoping next season things will be better. They will never be better when you do nothing but hope for change. People here get tired of hearing me say that a salon can be successful behind change. As long as you have not waited too long, any salon can be turned around. It will always take more than one small change. Change everything that is not working for you and the next season will actually be better. If you just do not have it in you to actually make those hard changes, it is smarter to close your doors. Time will not fix things, only change will give you a chance to fix things. We all have to play by the same rules and regulations and against bad PR. The tanner wants the best tanning experience and to be appreciated and be given great value. Only the salon owner overacts to things you can't control instead of adjusting. This same concern over regulations and bad PR have been going on for as long as I can remember, and yet what owners really need to be combating is that the consumer is smarter and expects a higher standard in their tanning experience. Old beat down salons will not survive. The savvy independent operator will always survive. Technology is changing everything, embrace the ability to reach tanners as quickly as you can bat an eye. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than watching a salon owner succeed. If you are properly structured and know your market the tanning industry can be profitable and fun. Like with anything once you have been defeated it is not fun any more. You are at a very important time of the year. Go all in or get out. Now is the time to make any changes to get the most out of the up-coming season. |

Rep Power: 21 | Re: Doom and Gloom I have had many businesses, started at the age of 20, all took time to get up and running, but here the catch, "what you put into you will get out ". Applied yourself to your business and make it profitable, some time it take some help and yes we are too strong to ask for, but if you want to make $$ you have to do something or get out. If you think negative you will get negative response. |

Rep Power: 11 | Re: Doom and Gloom Not near as long as you however the death of your business may not be attributed to negative publicity and less tanners nationwide as much as it may be an effect of something about your salon that may not appeal to customers. There are a lot less tanners than there were in the 90's yes however there are also less salons also. The amount of tanning salons has decreased which should even out to those who survive by picking up clients from closing locations. Now if they choose not to tan at your location then yes you have a reason to be negative. This being stated I know nothing about your store nor should I but I see a lot of negative posts by Peach, Dogfan, And Teaser (All the same I assume) But I don't have negativity because my salon is succeeding while based off of your posts I would assume yours is not anymore. |

Charging a fee for what he does is his livelihood, just like you charge a fee for someone to tan.. No need to laugh at him or make jokes..we are all in this together. While some see Doom, others see Gloom. |

Rep Power: 12 | Re: Doom and Gloom I used Steve's services when I opened my space. Part of the business plan was to take a look at demographics, existing salons, etc. He put together some numbers that he thought we'd see our first year, and he was spot on. Actually, my numbers exceeded his projections. He was well worth the money I spent for her service. I found him on this site, thank goodness. He should be able to post as well as anyone else. I, for one, appreciate his insight. |
