How would you guys handle this employee resignation?

This is what I received through E-Lync (SunLync POS Email)

"I wanted to let you know i needed to put my two weeks in today."

I am always in the salon, IDK why she couldn't just come up to me.......honestly i'm a little ******, but she is NOT one of our top sales people....She has been here for over a year and still ask customers their last name when they come in....so I think it's a blessing that she is leaving!

What is the procedure that you guys require for employees putting their 2 week notice in?

Thanks,

Pete Zito

Why are you mad? Its not like working front desk at a tanning salon is an ideal career for most people. Be happy she had the consideration to give you notice, she could of just left mid shift or not shown up at all. For the most part, we offer entry level poisitions and are just a stepping stone for people. When an employee gives their two weeks, make sure to have it in writing with their signature and date on it, also make sure proper non-disclosure agreements have been signed to help protect any company information.

Re: How would you guys handle this employee resignation?

I'm not "MAD".....I'm annoyed that she put in her 2 weeks in an email containing 1 sentence, instead of coming to myself or my salon manager.

This thread was to get input on how other salons required employees to put in their notice.

I guess we accidentally skipped this in the employee handbook.

We do have a non-compete signed by all employees...

Thanks,

I agree. I would have it in writing and to be honest, if she isn't that good at sales and you don't feel she is as welcoming with your clients as some of your other employees....Cover her shifts and tell her she can go now. Get her out. I've always gone that route because you never know what people are capable of and once they give their notice, they are no longer devoted to you and your salon!

It is a salon, not corporate America...it is a low paying job offering no career goals or benefits (referring to the industry, not your salon).

There are no etiquette or considerations..

What more are you expecting? They could have decided not to come in and let you figure it out. At least you got an email with a 2 week notice.

Print the email for your records in case she decides to collect unemployment anytime in the next 18 months. I automatically build an unemployment defense file on each worker when they leave us.

An email records the date for everyone - so nobody is confused when the 2 weeks started.

I think it is very considerate - and somewhat unusual for tanning salon staff - to give two weeks notice.

She may have been uncomfortable saying it in person - afraid you would be disappointed or ask her why or try to talk her into staying. OR - she may have thought written notice was more "professional" (it is) but she didn't go so far as type and print out a letter and bring it in hard copy.

I'd thank her for her service and take the 2 weeks to get someone up and ready to take her shifts.

Re: How would you guys handle this employee resignation?

Emails are now the accepted form of communication, tho rapidly being overtaken by texting.

Would texting have been better? No. So accept the email as the now standard form which it has been for the last few years. Nothing rude about it. As far as it being short and sweet, what do you expect, a whole paragraph of explanations as to why they are leaving. I recently left a 35 year career, tho it was official retirement, I emailed all my info and request to my corporate HR when the time came..no letter, no explanations..short and sweet. Just like your employee did.

Nobody writes 'letters' anymore.
