Re: Slow season

Simple Facebook ad, promote for $150-$200 and fill your salon with new clients:

"House of Tan introduces NEW SUNLESS WINTER SHADES (wait... WHAT!!!)

Even out your tone today or add a little glow for the weekend, call today to ask about our INTRODUCTORY OFFER for the first 50 clients. BTW: Share this post (from our Facebook page) and get a FREE SPRAY TAN!"

Pair it with a picture that drives home the point.

Re: Slow season

Are you able to dial that into your units or do you go with a totally different solution ? Do you have a machine for light "winter shades"?

Re: Slow season

Same solution, less grams and/or spray time; you can also adjust the spray pressure a bit if needed; it depends on the solutions viscosity.

For our regulars that like to be dark all year, we can quickly change the spray time and bump it up that way.

The best defense against the slow season or any season is to have a business model that will get the most out of every season or time of the year. In many cases the biggest issue is a salon owners fear of change or the willingness to except that declining sales can be attributed to anything except the tanning industry in general.

100% of the time I find with new clients that lack of change and fear of change is the reason for declining numbers. Your thinking must first change to be able to except that new structure, marketing and pricing is the key, this coupled with salons becoming worn and tattered will have a negative effect.

this can be changed and the success of your salon can be controlled by your efforts and most importantly change. tanners have changed, tanning trends have changed, spending triggers have changed. If you and your business have not, your business is certain to experience a slow painful death.

Control your success. This should not have been an unusually bad October, November for any salon. Your sales should have been steady or up over 2012.

Re: Slow season

Steve, Overall good advise. Any good business model should have a short and long term plan for improvement and change. Every year, a % of your income should be dedicated to planned improvements and changes; not panic changes that are reactive.

You must keep in mind that in the past 5 years the consumer has changed. Not long ago to reach a consumer you did print, mailers, radio, TV. Now 60% of your target demographic can only be reached through their hand held mobile device and social media. However 40% of your target customer must still be reached by traditional advertising. Not only must you advertise in all of these medias but when you advertise and what you advertise will determine your success. You must formulate a strategy and stay with it. You must also be sure that the product and service you sell is the best available. Advertising is less costly than ever but you must use what is available to you. Do not be afraid of todays technology and advertising opportunities. take time to educate yourself about things you do not know. Fear can cripple a business. Make sure your business utilizes all advertising methods and value all types of tanners and make it your goal to reach every tanner in your market. Remember the sale is made in the salon and you must do everything in your power to get a tanner to step through your door. After they get there you must be prepared to provide the best tanning experience.

Re: Slow season

Most of us have seen the worst of the 2013 slow season. There should be a slow but sure trend upward from here. I like to cut the best deals of the year during this time. Anyone who is tanning with you in December deserves your best deals.

Advertising to HS students is insane. Advertise to reach prospective clients who have money!

Steve, I'm curious, how many salons do you personally own/operate? Not saying I disagree with much of what you say, but if you don't own/run salons what is your purpose for much of the posting that you do? Are you looking for consulting work? I think Tan Talk charges for advertising, is that what you should maybe be doing?
