Employees only get compensated free tanning

Greetings,

My girlfriend was offered a job at a tanning salon in ohio, which she took. The owner does not pay her employees, but she compensates them with free tanning. She did this for several months, but then the owner began demanding more and more out of her, to the point where it wasnt rational for her to continue working there. My girlfriend called in today, and the owner told her to just turn in her keys.

My question is:

Is this legal? Can an employer of a tanning salon get out of paying their employees and only offer free tanning as compensation for their time and services?

Is it legal? It is a very grey area as far a proving a case with documentation; could be considered barter or trade.

However illegal or not, she took the “job” under the terms agreed to. If she wanted to stop doing this “job”, fine (I would); but to then after the fact go back and attack the person whom offered the “job” is sad and quite frankly lacking integrity.

If you agree to something (be it whatever it may be) suck it up and deal with the situation you agreed to. Don’t go and blame someone else after the fact.

Next time, tell her not to work for free tanning, beer or frosted flakes.

The crazy part is that she had access to keys!

What you don't understand is what she "agreed" to do and what she is now expected to do are two different things. Like I said, the owner is now demanding more and more out of her, ultimately making it not worth her time just for the free tanning. It was a sweet deal at first. She works ~6 hours per week, she got free tanning, keys to the place to tan whenever she liked, and she got me half off their packages. But then the owner wanted her there more and wasnt compensating for the additional time there. She would pressure these young girls into working more then its worth to them, just so she could get out of working. She literally pays $0 to employees.

I never said I was going to do anything about it. I was just curious if this is legal. The most I wanted to do is use it for defense in case the owner gets shitty with me or my gf while we continue to tan there. Oh and I couldn't care less about integrity btw. The woman is shady. And im definitely not trying to "blame someone else"? Blame someone else for what?

The woman is shady for sure and I am saying that anyone in that situation can just walk away. You owe her nothing and she can do nothing. I apologize if I miss-read your question of legality.

Just tell her to walk away and all is good; greener pastures elsewhere.

Karma always takes care of shady people.

It is illegal to to compensate employees in this manner. They must be payed at least minimum wage. (Less if in the service industry where tips are applied to wages)

This is the answer I was looking for. Thank you. Just FYI, I will not be doing anything with this information. I was butthurt over her being asked to hand in her keys. I have since cooled down and came to the realization there is no reason to be angry.

In Missouri, you don't have to pay an employee minimum wage unless you gross more than 500,000 a year, only wish I did that! I do pay them 7.25 an hour though

Just curious as to what other salons do. I pay $8.00 per hour (min wage is $7.25) plus free tanning.

I also let my girls tan for free. They also pay my cost for lotions. The more lotions they try, the more knowledgeable they are for recommendations!

Your girlfriend is just another come-and-go for the owner. She's no different than the ones before and after her...(I'm sure the owner has been through a thousand employees with this shitty method) The owner took advantage of her and knew your girlfriend would get fed up eventually....thus the instantaneous "then gimme your key" resolution. It is shitty and highly unprofessional of the "boss". Life lesson for you two??? Abolutely! Next time make sure all duties/responsibilities/risks/rewards/blahblahblahfineprint are written in contract and signed by both parties before taking the job.
