Businesses need help to be successful. The simplest things require help to be successful. Look at people that want to loose weight. The know they need to control eating in order to loose weight and yet without help they just can't succeed. That person reaches out to a consultant like weight watchers or Jenny Craig and with the help of a weight loss consultant they succeed. Qualified assistance, a coach so to speak will always generate a greater result, 100% of the time.

It is the same in business, you know the result you are looking for, however you need assistance to best formulate a plan to achieve it.

Re: rebuilding a salon

Google Kizer and Bender and look for a You Tube video called Fresh Bread, its about revamping your salon to keep things fresh. I am constantly bringing in new things and taking out dated materials. You have to keep things fresh. Just last week I brought in an automatic candy dispenser, filled it with M&M and watched the customers laugh, use and love the new toy. Food is love to people, get a candy dish. As one customer said, I feel like I am walking into your living room not the lobby of a tanning salon. We have colorful chairs, magazines neatly arranged, simple floral arrangements and we keep it very clean. I even have an inexpensive aromatherapy machine with a neutral scent, nothing floral, very subtle.

Try a referral program, get your current customers to love you enough to refer you to friends and family, and give them a free tan for doing so.

Do you have a facebook page, a website or a yelp offer. Start your marketing with that.

Create a brand. it could be as simple as "your hometown tanning salon", then get a graphic artist to help with creating marketing pieces that connect your brand to your message and brand everything from business cards to your price sheets. Thing about the great brands, IBM, Coke, Pepsi, the branding is consistent. Like being hit over the head with a NERF hammer, it's always there, you immediately know a coke can when you see one. Then start to advertise and promote. Go after schools, PTA's, cheer squads and even the local fair. We're sponsoring the local cheer squad for the fireworks booth, and they're giving our flyers and information out. Start small, research all the options for advertising in your town and make careful, educated decisions. Most ads won't produce a huge response the first month or two, but don't stop and don't change the marketing message or image, Let it grow on people. Keep at it and stay consistent.

You have taken on a huge task, but by letting people know that you are the NEW OWNER (maybe a banner for the front of the salon), by developing a brand and a message - then sticking with it, and by spending your ad dollars carefully, next year you will have a busy season. Courage and congratulations on the new adventure.
