More often than not a person will open a business because they feel that the product or service they are going to offer is currently substandard in the chosen market. How do we best deal with competition? Establish the standard in your salon that all others are judged by. If you have a beautiful salon, properly structured, well trained staff, great equipment mix that offers all available types of tanning, great product selection, complete and convenient price structured, effective advertising, utilizing all media including social media, easy access and ample parking and the competition will never hurt you. On the other hand if you are lacking in any of these areas you are in for a battle. Getting too comfortable with your way of doing things and not growing and changing and keeping your salon new and fresh will bring competition. As a salon owner you can't get lazy. We should take the time to evaluate or be evaluated to establish changes that are required to be cutting edge. |

The season of 2013 will be a very telling year for me. I can say that a small chain from a nearby city bought out one of my closest competitors and they have affected me a little (1 location). They advertise more then the previous owners did, before it was like I had no competition (even though I did) but the old owners did nothing. The salon was dirty, no advertising and overpriced. Now its cleaner, cheaper and they advertise. Its defiantly cost us some sales, especially since right at the same time my landlord decided to redo the front of our building, my sign was down and the whole front of the plaza was covered with sheets and scaffolding for 3 months! People thought we were closed. We are down about 20%, my plan is to remodel, get a new awesome bed, new logo, new uniforms, and do a re grand opening Jan. Hopefully it kicks *** and gets that 20% back and more. |

Rep Power: 20 | Re: How much $ did new competition take from you? If a new salon is properly advertising their salon with an offer to new tanners that can't be ignored, competing salons will see a drop in traffic. this is why it is so important to remember that no matter how long you have operated your salon you must keep it fresh. You must market and advertise as though you just opened. You must always look and feel like you are a brand new salon. You must constantly be evolving with timely changes in price structures, equipment and advertising methods and message. You can't be the same today as you where 3 or 4 years ago. It is important to make potential new operators to think twice before they come to your market. If a new salon comes in you must never allow them to have any advantage. |

If your compitition is outside this range and you treat your customers well any give them options you will probably do ok. If they open up closer then it can be a battle. A new guy popped in 3.2 miles away with all brand new equipment. There has been about a 10% drop in revenue. It could haave been a lot worse. |

Rep Power: 52 | Re: How much $ did new competition take from you? I had my salon for over 15 years & it's going to always happen. The first time it did I got all worked up & worried but it was actually a GOOD thing! Even though I was completely dedicated to keeping everything top notch, it forced me to look @ everything from the customers perspective. We implemented changes, got better & not only survived the new kids on the block but thrived. DIVERSIFICATION is so important!
