Question Accelerating Tanning Times

At our salon, we only allow customers to add up to 2 minutes a tanning session when they are first starting out to help prevent burning. We basically follow the manufacturers recommended times for skin types. This is our salon rule and we rarely break it. We get a lot of stink about it from some clients but I'd rather them gripe than burn and sue us for allowing them to burn.

My question is, in Texas, is it a law that we are to follow the recommended times? It seems like I read that, but I've been reading and rereading the information of the Department of Healths website and cannot find it.

Does anyone have any information about this and how do you handle tanning times for your customers?

Re: Accelerating Tanning Times

In terms of TEXAS - I believe they hold to a strict "24 hour policy" (must have at least 24 hours between tans), but have never heard you have to follow the manufacturer times --- someone else from Texas will perhaps weigh in.

In terms of accelerating the times.........we generally only move up 1-2 mins at a time at the most. It will depend on:

a. how long it has been since their last time (did they have time to process the previous exposure, but not SO long as to have the 'base' provided wear down)

b. how they did with the previous visit.

We explain - it can be like being on vacation - 4 hours one day and you are fine, 4 hours the next ok and the third day you are out for an hour and a half and get fried -- because it finally "catches up" with you. So we explain they need to move up slowly and take time off, stay the same or back it down if they see any signs of exposure coming (pinkness or even dryness/itching of the skin can be a sign to slow it down).

As a salon owner - you will also know your equipment best and which beds are more freshly lamped, more powerful etc. This - and their skin type - will factor into how quickly they move up as well (a type 4 has more "margin for error" than a type 2).

Better safe than sorry - that is always the better policy!

Re: Accelerating Tanning Times

When I had my tanning salon, I would only allow 2 min increases. I had the policy in my release as well as that all tan times were decided upon by the certified tanning technician. It didn't stop all arguments, but helped when I pointed it out.

Re: Accelerating Tanning Times

In every tanning room you are to have posted a sign white/red lettering purchased from the Texas Department of Health. The #1 instruction to customers states to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use of this device. If you don't have those signs, and have not had a visit from TDH, you should get them or they will write you up upon their visit and make you get them and they will make a return visit later and check to ensure they're posted, then close out the warning. Doing what you are doing with the 2 minutes is fine. We do that also, even if the tanners are defiant. We tell them, better to be safe than burn.
