No big chains near me, Biggest chain is about an hour from me.
The two salons fighting it out have 10 to 15 units - I have 24.

I've been in this location for 22 years. I could hurt both of them but I'm just not going to stoop that low

A little stubborness doesn't hurt. It's the principal right?

Re: Beware !!!

So sorry that you've got this problem. However, please try to hang on, the industry needs your wisdom and experience. I have learned from all business that low integrity people do low integrity things - and though they surprise us with their tactics - the result is almost always the same. They can't go the distance because the lies and the bad karma catch up with them. So hold on, watch the war between the two of them and be ready to help the tanners hurt by her come back. Maybe position yourself as "The only and original hometown tanning salon" or "We care about you not just your money" type of promotions. My career in tanning is still very young, but my career in business in not. The acrimony in this industry astonishes me, but one rule never changes - Good business done badly is bad business - and bad business don't survive in the long run.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Re: Beware !!!

according to steve and others here, free or near free is the way to do business. free to get them in your door, then its your job to retain them. maybe this gal has retained steve to help drown you out. ??

Re: Beware !!!

by the way, i have'nt adopted this policy of getting in new clients. i'd rather get them in the old fashioned way..."loyalty based on trust"

Well............ The battle is over. The new store is gone. Lots of people out of money too.
I heard she managed to buy a new horse and motorcycle while she was open.

Her former employer is still chargeing 99cents.

I assume she has lined up beds.

The girl has balls........... She might make it..............
Today she called my manager and wanted to buy the computer from there, Which of coarse would have my entire data base on it.

I assume she already has her employers.
When hiring employees they should sign a confidentiality agreement and key personnel should sign a no compete agreement for a time and area within 10 miles of your market. When someone is looking for a job they will be happy to sign the document and it will prevent this from happening.

Re: Beware !!!

I don't disagree, and I wish non-competes and non-disclosures would stick in California. As former SVP in Corp HR I fought a lawsuit for 2 years on these issues. Left no time for my "real" job duties. Better to try and build employee loyalty and keep some things close to the chest. Even in a purchase the former owner had a legal obligation for only 5 years and 5 miles.

Re: Beware !!!

Noncompete confidentiality agreement that is one of the funniest posts yet. If home depot doing a million a week cant how the heck is a 5k a week salon going to. I cant even believe it

Re: Beware !!!

glad you did'nt stoop to the 99 cent tans...one salon is closed now. one still doing it cause the cheap azz clients demand it. your clients are fine spending what it costs to be at the nicest salon in your area. your clients are not going to leave you for "cheaper" salons
i have competitors that sell minutes still for next to nothing...they are still in business there will always be cheap salons and there should always be higher end salons too. there's a market for both. i just choose to work less and make more.
