Re: Software for a smaller salon - with spa services

Whatever you do, avoid Helios! Our previous owner owned the software (paid outright 1000$) and they still want me to buy it outright or keep paying over $100 per month. I switched to tantrack. Also Helios customer service or support is awfuL!

Re: Software for a smaller salon - with spa services

Ann et al,

I'm adding waxing services this month, currently using Helios 11. I have a webinar meeting with Helios on Monday and need to organize a list of questions to ask them.

Here are the issues that I can think of:

  • Helios would have to be upgraded to 12. Would have to be in desktop version ... never let anyone have control of your database.
  • Helios 12 doesn't have scheduling. Not a deal breaker since the esthetician is used to using manual appt. book.
  • Marketing - Very important to me. Helios 12 uses Helios Hub, but I have my own marketing processes in place and don't want to use Helios. Does the Hub allow us to generate email addys, text ph numbers, address labels for use as we see fit ... with useful search criteria!
  • Reporting - will Helios 12 be able to generate reports valuable to the waxing business (division/department reports)
  • Training - helios 12 is totally different than helios 11 and there will be a learning curve ... they charge $195 to uprade/train.
  • Suprises! Versions 12 Zingers that they don't tell you about

I hear a lot of *****ing about Helios software and support, but I've been using for ten years and have been able to do 95% of what's important to run a salon. The support has been very good too.

Anyone have additions to the list above??

Timothy

With much experience in helios switching makes no sense.

Helios is quite expensive and a lot less stable under heavy use which is probably why folks complian about it. As i have said paying a grand a year for so so soffware is big money for nothing. Others cost 1k one time no ongoing fees.

I've been using Spa-Booker for the last few years myself and I've had nothing, but a positive experience. Initially I was just looking for a digital appointment book, but the extra tools included totally sold me on it.

I know that Booker also offers a "SalonBooker" for salons, but I'm not really sure what the difference between the two is.

We use Tan Track. I like the cost, ease of use, and easy set up. Overall for a small salon I think it is the best choice.

We use Helios and from a POS position its fine.. However, we are looking to switch as well because the processor Helios forces you to go through for EFT's just jacked my bill up another $150 a month as well as Helios adding more to my monthly subscription.. I am NOT happy with this and will be switching.. Looking at SunTouch or Tan Track
