We just bought a salon that is SO SLOW! The employees who where already employed with the previous owner work for free (free tanning) well I was planning on having my husband and myself run the salon (no employees) till we can re-brand and fix the salon up I spoke to the girls and let them know as I DONT EXPECT to make anyone work for free... well they are now upset and they like working for free tanning.... I tried thinking about it and thought maybe I could pay them in credit lets say they get $8/hr well convert that into $8/hr they can use on anything in the salon (tanning,lotions,jeans,spray tans....) they said they didnt need that... ? I just dont get it, our monthly unlimited EFT is only $25/month! Why would they want to work for free? Should I keep them and let them? I feel bad about it lol

I know I work in my fitness centers daycare room sometimes for free classes.. maybe this would be the same thing... IDK I feel bad letting them go but I dont feel its right to not pay them.. ? Why would they push lotions and packages if they where working for free? I am just seeing if anyone else ran into this arrangment

This may be way off, but...maybe they're skimming cash or something? Could there be another reason that they want to be there?

Ya there is no reason they would WANT to work for free. There has to be something else going on. stealing lotions and selling them on ebay, pocketing cash...something doesnt add up. If you insist on keeping them, get cameras ASAP!

Yea i agree i pay my help and give them free tanning and have a hard time getting them to show up on time or at all in some cases something defs. going on.

My husband and I just bought our first tanning salon... and this is my very first post!!! :)
Our problem is that not only do our employees tan for free, but each of the previous owners allowed EVERY past employee to tan for free as well.... even the ones that were fired!!! We've just now informed all of them that we will allow them to tan 4 times for free each month and nothing more. Even at that, we are constantly giving away free tans. It wouldn't be so bad if they bought lotion or maybe bought a session here and there to supplement the free ones that we are giving.... any suggestions on past employee free tanning??
Healthyglowmn... maybe they are giving all of their friends free tans as well and pocketing the money.... we are seeing customers with free tanning until May of 2012 with NO record of any payment.... it's crazy!!

No free tans for past emps. Current ones can tan as often as is reasonable. I did give my former emps that left on good terms discounted tanning and lotions.

You own the business now, most likely the old owners gave their friends free tanning right after you bought the place. Happens lots. You set the rules!

Like Delany said ... No free tans for ex-employees. Once they're gone, they're gone. If you want to keep them coming to your place, give them a few months of discounted tanning. In my case I gave them the 3-mionth copay if they left on good terms - they had to pay the per-session charge though. After the 3 months they're on their own.

You want your employees in good standing to tan because they are your best advertisement. Half of my lotion sales are due to questioning my employees as to how they got so bronze. Having them tan for free gives them more incentive to tan.
