Our problem is that not only do our employees tan for free, but each of the previous owners allowed EVERY past employee to tan for free as well.... even the ones that were fired!!! We've just now informed all of them that we will allow them to tan 4 times for free each month and nothing more. Even at that, we are constantly giving away free tans. It wouldn't be so bad if they bought lotion or maybe bought a session here and there to supplement the free ones that we are giving.... any suggestions on past employee free tanning??
Healthyglowmn... maybe they are giving all of their friends free tans as well and pocketing the money.... we are seeing customers with free tanning until May of 2012 with NO record of any payment.... it's crazy!!
1. It is YOUR business. Why on earth would you continue to honor FREE tanning (of any number of sessions) to former employees that have nothing to do with you? NO free tanning to former employees of someone else. If you want to give YOUR former employees free tanning after they leave, feel free. But set the tone upfront - this is YOUR business now, with YOUR rules.

2. Did you not look into this when you bought the business? You have no "obligation" to honor free tanning until May or anything else. Again - the FORMER owner made that arrangement and THEY got the money (or gave it away). You set the rules now. If they are unwilling to PAY to tan with you - then what makes you think they will stick with you once their "free" tanning expires in May? Cut your losses now.

Re: Free Employees??

What amazes me is the high quality of individuals that buy businesses in this economy. Maybe I should sell now while the getting out is good ....

Re: Free Employees??

First off, how do you manage free employees? What kind of accountability do they have to you and your business? There are plenty of honest, hard working people looking for any jobs these days. Post a "Now Hiring" sign on your door and see how many bites you get. Weed out the free-loaders! When I purchased my salon, there was a clause in my bill of sale dealing with packages that I would honor but that were sold and processed under the old owners. They basically had to calculate the percent of clients that I would be servicing and deduct a fair amount from the sale price.

Secondly, as soon as I took over, I informed all past employees that the business was under new ownership and that they would not be able to tan for free. They never worked for me, what do I owe them?

Take Sunsally's advice, she has great input.

Re: Free Employees??

I am going into my 6th year. I allow my employees to tan for free. Former employees do not tan free. I give them a 10% or a 20% discount depending on how long they were employed with me. (two girls worked for three years, so they get 20%) I don't mind my employees tanning free because it makes them more knowledgeable of the equipment and the lotions that we carry. Plus, their tan is good advertisment. I have rarely had a problem with them abusing this priviledge, although it has happened. They are only allowed to tan in the high pressure once a week. All other beds they can tan in as many times as they want, of course only once a day though.
Giving tans to former employees that didn't even work for you is crazy though. I hope you told them you were ending that. Maybe you could offer them a discount on packages when they buy a bottle of lotion from you.

Re: Free Employees??

I own a gym and tanning, I run the business myself but in January I am planning on attending school 3 nights a week for 12 weeks. I can't afford to hire someone to watch my business while I am gone, pay my over head and pay for school. I have found 3 high school seniors who are over 18 who want to each work 1 night a week for the 12 weeks in exchange for unimited free tanning and gym membership for the 3 mths. I did that math and it works out for both of us to allow this.

Some times people don't really need the money, but enjoy the product. Allowing someone to tan for free is fine. I would never allow past employees do that. Especially if I bought the business. People will understand. I would just double check your paper work when they are working and make sure they aren't stealing from your till or products and not giving things away to friends.

How are you going to handle the 4-6 weeks of training?

Re: Free Employees??

Honestly, when I bought the place I didn't even get 4-6 weeks training. They aren't teaching anything in the gym. They are mostly just here to sign ppl up for gym, ask some questions and I have a small tanning business, nothing fancy. The girls hang out here all the time they see me do things like start beds and clean and stuff. They will be more then ready with me showing them around. I don't believe that it take 4-6 weeks to work in any salon honestly.
