Switching to minutes - Questions questions

Those of you who sell minutes instead of tanning sessions how do you price your minutes?

It doesn't make sense to price them at a $1 per minute, because then you really lose out on your 10 minute beds. Our 10 minute beds (Level 4) are $15 per 10 minute tan. We would be losing 50% revenue on them. I realize that charging a dollar per minute will be better on the $20 minutes beds (per tan session charge is $7)

Also, nobody is going to pay $20 for 20 minutes in a Level 1 bed. If you start charging 2 minutes per minute on level 4 and then 1/2 minute for minute on level 1 to even things out, then you have a bookkeeping nightmare on your hands.

I assume that people who use minutes all have the same kind of beds throughout the salon. If NOT, can you give me an idea how this works so that it makes sense?

Thanks

Do not switch to Minutes!

Do a search on here and find out why.

Re: Switching to minutes - Questions questions

First off everyone on here will tell you to not do minutes. That being said, my salons could not survive without minutes. Being located in a stingy college town with all the other salons doing minutes forces us to offer them.

We sell our minutes packages for the level 1 only. From there you sell upgrades. One of my salons only has 1 level of upgrades so the computer is set up to take double the minutes. My other salon we have upgrade fees that range from $4 to $8

Re: Switching to minutes - Questions questions

Well generally salons that sell minutes have minutes packages for each level of equipment. The bigger the minutes package the cheaper per minute

for example base bed 100 minutes for $39
VHR 75 minutes for $49
stand up 50 minutes for $45

and then your next package up will be a bit cheaper per minute

If you wish to cut your sales in half, switch to minutes, you only loose money on them. If your going to do some minutes only do one small package that is also the most expensive per minute, tell customers that do use them that once their done, its better to go with sessions.

I have 6 base bed sessions for $38 or 100 min for $39, but on a 20 min base bed, they will only get 5 sessions for the $39 if they are going max time.

The minutes are almost never sold, kept as a last resort. Pretty much only the old clients even know about them.

Re: Switching to minutes - Questions questions

We used to offer minutes packages and switched to a points system.
With the minutes we had to figure out the single session cost and then sell the minutes for each level/type of bed. Was terrible.
Went to points and are making much more money this way. Even easier for upgrades than sessions are! Each point is equal to $1 (easiest way to do it).
So if you have a level 1 bed that is $8 for single then the system will be programmed to take off 8 points when this bed is used. Level 2 is $10 then system set to take off 10 points, etc, etc.
Same as minutes, the bigger the point package they buy, the cheaper those points are. Makes it easier to get people in the bigger (more expensive) beds because if they buy a 75 point package, they are more apt to use the bigger beds because it is only taking xx number of points and the points get used faster that way.
The more options there are, the more confusing it can be and the more likely that they aren't going to buy anything. Not what we want.

Re: Switching to minutes - Questions questions

The only thing I use minutes on is my Stand ups. Either $2/ minute on 7 minutes max=$14 for single(Super Sonic 220w) or three levels of minute packages, that get progressively cheaper as they buy more. 25 min for $39, 50 for $59 or 75 for $79. has always worked very well. I feel I would lose money if I did minutes elsewhere.
