Question Don't know if i'm in the right or wrong?

Okay, i have been running the tanning salon i work at for almost 9 years now. At first i didn't do the things that i am now doing. Partly because i didn't care.
I am now 23 years old and feel more responsible for the salon then i ever did before. I honestly wouldn't be where i am at today if it wasn't for the owner.
Now that i have the title of being a manager i have stepped my game up to become more advanced in my knowledge of tanning and manager duties. I don't just think about myself anymore i think about the business.
The owner is very happy with this but i do have certain dilemmas with my duties. I try harder than any of my other employees and feel that they should try just as hard as i do. We have 2 salons that are high end and very clean. I manage just one of the stores and another girl manages the other. I honestly love her to death but i don't feel that she does any manager duties.
Last night i walked in to the salon she runs after hours to stock the lotions which is something that she should have handled herself but didn't. So i decided to walk around and look at how the salon was being kept up and checked how the beds was being cleaned. The bottom acrylics were clean but the tops were not! I have had meetings about this problem and her as a manager should make sure that they are clean as well.
I don't want my customers to see the beds like this because it is very unsanitary. The sad thing is that she closed last night. The rest of the salon was in perfect shape and clean like it should be. I left a note explaining that she needs to make sure that she cleans the top acrylics on the beds every time a customer leaves one. The owner then told me that i shouldn't have left the note and just told him but in my opinion it needed to be addressed asap. Was i in the right or was i wrong for leaving the note? I just want the salons i work for to be as good as any other salon and am willing to go extra mile to do it.

Re: Don't know if i'm in the right or wrong?

definitely should not have left a note! to me notes are cowardly and if you feel strongly enough about something then handle the problem by going directly to the source,,, what if who the note was intended for didnt see it first, and just some employee saw it, that employee sees the manager isnt doing what she should be so now the employee slacks and loses respect for their manager. the owner was right and you should have addressed him directly with the problem. owning multiple salons i always felt the same way.

Re: Don't know if i'm in the right or wrong?

Well i called her first and left a message but i knew that she was opening and knew that she would be seeing the note as soon as she went in. But i do understand what your saying and think that what you said was a wise answer. I am now in the position to where i want more for the salon then i ever have before. She said that i shouldn't have inspected her salon. Was that wrong of me also?

again if you would have just taken it to the owner she wouldnt have known, b/c what she thinks doesnt matter, its what the owner thinks! you should like a good loyal employee but maybe if you want so much more you should be in business for yourself, i would suggest you start looking to start your own salon

You have been running a salon since you were 14?

Re: Don't know if i'm in the right or wrong?

Again thanks for the input. It would be so nice to own my own considering i know how to run one like it should be ran. I am such good friends with the owner i would like to be a partner in what he has going for him. Hopefully it will happen one day! I don't want to do it without him cause he is my best friend. He has showed me the ropes and depends on me for a lot of stuff and i like the fact that he feels he couldn't do it without me. I respect him and follow his advice most of the time. He is willing to do this when the time is right. We have talked about this dozens of times so I'm hoping the time comes soon!

If you're position isn't "above" the other manager's, then you shouldn't be addressing her about problems. That's for her boss (the owner) to handle.

This is exactly correct. If her salon condition effects yours I would have still told the owner but not in a way that made it seem like you were checking up on the other manager.

if after 9 years the time isnt right could be a good chance that your time with his company wont come
