Lightning Storms

Does anyone close their store down during lightning storms?

Re: Lightning Storms

No. I tell people the worst that's going to happen during a storm is the electricity may go out. (I hope that's the worst......)

Re: Lightning Storms

We had a lightning storm last summer take out the com chips in some of our beds and the controller. We operated manually for a week until we traced down the problem.

Re: Lightning Storms

SteveO, an opto-isolator from ADI will help prevent this in the future. About a hundred bucks and super easy to install. WAAYYY better than having to change all your com. chips.

Must have been the same storm, we had here last summer. I was off-line also for three days. Com chips on numerous beds and one timer in a bed was destroyed. My manager, t-max, was going crazy until I replaced everything that was bad. I think if we get a lightning storm like this again, I'm going to shut er' down.

Re: Lightning Storms

Shane, can you provide details on that? We get the same issue of fried chips. At high altitude here in Colorado Springs we get thousands of strikes per hour during a storm. Thanks

Re: Lightning Storms

Yeah Crystal, it's either "opto" or "opti" - isolator.

It's a small black plastic box that has an in and out port for a t-max cable and has 2 powersupplies that need to be plugged in.

You just plug the 2 power supplies in and for the t-max cables just run a small cable from your t-max manager to the opto-isolator and then from that to your first room in your daisy chain.

It's super simple to do. I have mine mounted right next to my manager. If I recall it was around $100 but it's been 7-8 years ago I bought mine, so it may have changed since then.

I'm pretty sure 4 seasons would have it, as they carry most of ADI's other accessories that many don't.

It's basically a surge protector for your com chips. Some of the best $$ I've ever spent.

Re: Lightning Storms

We had our electrician install a surge supressor on the circuit box. Not sure if it's as effective, though.
