How do you have access to your store computers? Sounds like a cool system.

Would any of you recommend having someone work 'your' hours while you (the owner) started a full time job else where?

If it makes business/financial sense - yes!

Weigh the following:

1. What would I pay someone to work these hours vs. what does it "cost" me to work them rather than taking the full time job opportunity?

a. In this, on the hiring side, take into consideration both their hourly wage as well as any commissions, taxes, payroll fees.
b. On the FT opportunity for you, take into consideration the pay as well as any benefits (medical, paid vacations/holidays, pension,...)

2. How well can I hire and/or train someone else to "sell" as well - or BETTER - than I do?

3. How well can I hire and/or train someone else to "do the other stuff" - cleaning, customer service, reliability, etc - as well or better than I do.

Realize that with a FT job, as the owner, you will still have the "job" of overseeing your business! This may mean payroll, scheduling, training, marketing, ordering, supplies,....more or less, depending on what you delegate to staff.

When it is time to look for a full-time job, it is time to sell the business.

A business SHOULD NEVER be treated as a hobby or part-time gig. And that is exactly what it becomes at that point.

The only 'absentee owners' that succeed are those who have paid the price of years of hard work in building their business/clientele/management and staff to full competence which allows them to 'kick' back and enjoy their efforts

Any absentee owners out there needing a qualified eye in the sky making sure the salon is running as you directed, you need "Professor Marvel".

With all of this having been said, there are many on this site who run multiple locations...successfully. That is what you are looking for. The ability to run any location at a high level without your direct day to day input. lets face it; no matter how good your store is, one will not make you wealthy, or even successful in this business.

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

I need to just make my "one" location more successful. Can't really afford multiple locations although I totally understand how that would make you more successful in this business. I'm curious for those of you with one location that are successful other factors aside do you sell lower to get masses in the door or maintain higher prices to cater to the more desirable clientele? I'm battling this concept since my prices have always been on the high side and my clientele a bit more desirable let's just say. However at this point in time as I'm easing into other ventures I want to bring in more money to support other interests and think that I can make it by lowering prices and bringing in the masses. I am the only game in town for the past six years. Any advice?

Calsunmil, if you want to stay small and make money read some of my posts about numbers and tracking.

Throughput, Inventory Reduction, Gross Margins; that is what you must master if you want to make a good living off of a single salon.

I am putting together a big thread on this, perhaps it will be good enough to be made into a "sticky".
