Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

Peak season 8-5 Mon-Thurs
Off season 9-3 Mon-Thurs

The first 4 years I worked a ton of hours. Now I am entering my 6th year and I have 3 small children and I am so thankful for the fact this business allows me to work flexible hours and take extra time off needed! I believe it is important for your customers to know you (if you only own 1 salon) however; I think if you setup a good foundation when you start your business you should be able to take time off and know everything is going to run smoothly and your business is not going to fall apart! Staff only calls for emergencies. I think you should run your business and not let your business run you :)

If you have 1 store, it doesn't make much sense to pay someone 50-60k to run your store. Why? so you can goof off? (unless you have other income streams) Why not take normal hours 9-5 M-F and keep that money in your pocket. Or better yet, put some of it back into the business. If you have 2 or more stores, it makes a little more sense. Absentee owners are the no 1 reason why salons fail. No one cares about your business like you do.

Peach, where do you get I pay someone 50-60K a year to run my salon?!! Also you clearly missed the part about having 3 small children, goofing off?! HA! now that's funny. Somehow you took my post and twisted it into trying to prove a point that " I am goofing off, pay someone else 50-60K to run my salon, and that I am absent at my salon, oh yeah and it is going to fail" I Yi Yi- this is why I barely get on this site anymore, as it is too exhausting to just be yourself in your post as I am waiting for someone to "twist" it into something negative. Thanks for the heart felt concern and the "reality check" and your wisdom. Pretty sure the thread was "how much do you work in your salon". Have a AWESOME week working at your salon!!

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

I just purchased an existing salon and I work seven days a week and 8-10hours a day with one PT gal that works 10hours a week. I agree on saving $ where you can to make the business more profitable until it grows.

^^^^You do what you have to do, but you'll soon tire of that. After a period of time doing that, you'll get burned out, and wonder what you got yourself into.

You are right. Everyone's situation is different. I have a small child myself so I know what it is like. Our 7 year old daughter spends 2-3 hours a day at our store, after school. However, I know a lot of people who do not have those issues, but chose to be absentee owners and wonder why their store is not working. They spend a lot of money paying people to do things that they could do themselves. That is not a formula for building a small business. I am sorry if I insulted you. Did not mean to do that. :)

You can be absent but still very involved

I have four locations and visit each location daily, have cameras to check up on things.
Speak to my staff several times a day and have inhouse email and when i do not receieve updates every couple hours i worry.
I have access to all the computer systems remote as well

Is long as your involved your stores will be fine.
Its when you drop off the face of the earth things fall apart.

Absolutely!

You do not have to work "IN" your salon to work "ON" your business.

But - if you think it will just run by remote control - it won't.

You need to ensure it is running the way YOU want it to be run - from how customers are handled, sales expectations, cleanliness expectations and more.

Plenty of ways to do that without sitting behind the counter. But you WILL have to be actively involved on a daily basis.
