Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

Starting today, we initiated "summer hours" We are open just 46 hours a week and the wife and I are working all the shifts. We just laid off the only employee we had, and this will be the very first time, I have had to pay unemployment, in 26 years in the tanning business. This is the worse summer I have ever had. When things are slow, you have to let even your best employee go.

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

Sorry to hear that parrot head.

I'm hearing a lot of that.

To answer the question, I am in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and its a very different market. No tan tax, no teen bans (Although that one IS spreading across Canada SLOWLY).

I've worked one 2 6 hour shifts since May 17th and it was because staff couldn't show up. Although, I got to admit, after 7 years I am a little bored. I even told a few customers there was no appointments until 4, at 2, when there was, because I didn't want to deal with it. Big difference from the days I had to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and never shut up about tanning lotion.

I guess I just feel a little bored sometimes of the tanning salon itself.

Everyday. Direct supervision with my staff is really important.

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

I have started working every day except Sundays. I have cameras so my employees are pretty good about following policies/ driving sales but I like being in my salons....I also think customers like it too. Plus, the more I am there the more I know what customers needs/wants are. With the way things are going in this industry I feel it's extremly important to keep getting feedback from my clients.

I'm sorry to hear that! I don't own my salon exactly, my father does, but is currently training me to take it over (he is retiring soon), and I have actually been working unpaid in order to keep our two best employees over the summer. I'm in school and living at home so it's not much of an issue for me, but I totally understand the issue. My father is in the salon most days though, I think its good for an owner to work and connect with their customers! its probably one of the big reasons our customers keep coming back.

That is a GREAT way to start your takeover. Nothing would **** off clients more than to have the punk child come in and take away that ownership presence that made them love the place.

I personally hate being in my salon these days, and the customers can tell, my staff do a far better job lol. So I just stay out of their way and take care of the manager really well. She loves her position of power and my clients love her more than they like me.

I perceive this to be every salon owners goal, in whole or in part. I don't want anyone to hate their salons though. I have just found a new passion and feel like the salon takes me away from it sometimes.

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

We work ZERO hours/shifts in our locations. Invest in a good General Manager(s) and let them work the business for you. Anyone that works a lot of hours just bought themselves a job. In the beginning, yes, the owner needs to work a lot. But, after a couple of years you should be in the position to hire good managers. We're lucky, all 3 of our Managers have been in the business for years and managed places Like Palm Beach Tan, so they understand the business very well!

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

I am involved in the salons daily, i have a gm for all three locations. I visit each location several times a week. I can also view an hear the salons via my pc, ipad or smart phone amytime as well as log in remote via goto my pc atany time.

My staff may not see me daily , but i can promise you they know i am there and know i know what they are doing .

Re: How often do you work in your salon weekly?

We work our salon everyday except weekends. We get a lot of positive comments, that our customers love to see the owners putting there own blood, sweat, and tears into their business. If we fail and have to close the doors, we want to know that we tried, and have no one else to blame. We are just that, a Ma and Pa, that has done well in all our years. We have done well enough, to have had a comfortable style of living, but not well enough, to have hired a manager.
