Software advice

Not very long ago, I talked to a manuf about new software. They quoted me a price and perks.

I called a software manuf the other day to ask what kind of things I would need to do if we purchased used software.

He told me:
$100 required to register to our salon name
$599 required to upgrade to the latest version

So, the prices above in addition to what the seller is asking- is the manuf price. Anyone would then purchase from the manuf.

I question the fact that the software MUST be upgraded to the latest edition. When he told me it was required I asked him: So, you're telling me if I purchase this software and dongle, it wont work in my computer? He said that it would but if I ever called them for anything that they would not help me. Makes sense to me to register it, but upgrade it???

I called a software guy. Told him I was skeptical of what the manuf had told me. He's doing some research and going to see if he can figure out the conversion for me.

Has anyone ever bought used software and been told the same?

Has anyone ever converted software w/o the help of manuf?

Re: Software advice

We bought an older version of sun touch. Was told we needed to upgrade it for support. Been using it for two years without the upgrade. Even called in once and they "helped" a little before telling us we needed to upgrade...

Just do regular backups and be prepared to reinstall it from scratch if needed. That is my "support" plan and have used it a couple times. The key is to have current backups!!

Maybe you can help me with my suntouch problem. I am a new salon owner and bought salon with suntouch. I too have called and after a little help have been told to upgrade buy salon touch, etc. I am good with suntouch for now but am having a hard time bringing backup onto other pc.

I wanted to load software on pc at home to be able to play with it and figure out system a little better. I loaded on pc no problem. I have backed up software (step by step from manual) onto a flash drive and have brought home. After 2 days of messing around, I could not get data on software. Finally, someone in tech support remoted in and was able to do.

Now, back to square one. Brought home updated backup and trying to load on pc. Can not get to work. I know it can since they did it on pc with me. Told something like I was not administrator.

Have or do you backup and put on another pc? If so, maybe you can tell me what step i am missing.

Thanks!

Re: Software advice

I have done this several times with different PC's. What account are you logged in to under your home computer? What version of windows are you running?

I believe Vista (which IT person said would be a problem and then got on my pc virtually and was able to put data on from my flash drive that I got data from salon on).

So I have salon touch on pc. I even have the data he helped me load last week from salon I brought home onto home pc. I saved data yesterday on stick and can not get loaded.

He went through it so fast, I could not figure out where I went wrong. Then he was all about upselling me salon touch, etc.

He did mention something about me not being administrator when I was trying to load. At first, before him we were using code of 4444 which book told you first time users to use. After he got all loaded, I now use my code from salon which I am admin.

Does that make sense?

Thank You!

Not sure what you mean when asking what account logged in to under home pc? If you meant for sun touch software, I guess as myself now as administrator since I can do everything at salon with my code that the employees can not.

Vista has many built in security "enhancments". Right click on the toolbox icon and select run as. I don't have a vista PC in front of me, but it should be an option if I remember correctly. You will also have the option of running it as win XP. Try that as well.

Under XP, I have never had a problem.

You can run programs in XP compatibility mode. You can't run it as "XP" as to say, but it can run programs as if it is XP.
