Rep Power: 0 | Employees calling out...cut hours or let go? Each month I make the schedule I give the girls 5 days in which they can choose to definitely have free. (There are no full time employees here other than myself so I work the bulk of the hours....most of the time over 45 in a week and then more so at home marketing and doing research. We have two salons and I also go back and forth to make sure everything is running smoothly.) My issue is just with one salon. I have told them many times that I do not accept constant calling out! I even had a meeting last week concerning this issue and it seems to get through to everyone but one girl and for the life of me I can't understand her problem! "The only reason to ever call out is an emergency or if you're sick and in that case you have to find a cover and notify me immediately." Those were my exact words. Well, wouldn't you know it, yesterday she came into the salon and I left...only to have another girl call me about an hour later excitedly telling me she sold an expensive bottle. She wasn't on the schedule so I asked "When?" She answered "Just now...I'm covering for _____." Fantastic. The other girl had every opportunity to tell me she had a cover and came in just so it looked like she was going to be there. Should I cut her hours back (She only works about 10 hours a week) or tell her to leave? I'm torn only because she's a nice kid and when she is here she sells a lot and does a good job keeping the place clean. |

However, I have had employees before that constantly begged the staff to make changes for them. After a while, her calls went unanswered b/c they were sick of it.

It doesn't bother me if they find a cover....it just bothers me that she basically hounds the other girls to cover and if they say no she starts moving on to girls at my other salon. She was away at a beach house for close to a week and didn't want to drive back up for work. Her hours that week were covered by other girls. I think I'm going to do exactly that, speak to her and not to the group. It's just frustrating. Thanks for the response! I'm definitely taking your advice :) |

Exactly...I also checked our cleaning sheets from yesterday and she marked them down with her initials. She did about 3 hours worth of cleaning in 30 minutes to an hour? Highly unlikely. She even marked down things that I had done already. | |

Rep Power: 16 | Re: Employees calling out...cut hours or let go? Write her up since you have already given her a verbal warning. I had this problem. I verbally warned the employee the first time, the second time was a written notice stating if done again she would be terminated. I didnt have the problem again. And about 2 months later, she gave her 2 weeks anyhow. So you can see who is serious about their job and who is not. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Employees calling out...cut hours or let go? Fire her! I have people knocking down my door for jobs. Working at a tanning salon is the dream of every school age girl. It's a "cool crowd" thing. I wouldn't tolerate that more than once. I'm in NY, I'm sure it's not that different in Jersey. Firing is a hard thing to do. The truth of the matter is get used to it. You are in the drivers seat, and don't forget it. |

Rep Power: 21 | Re: Employees calling out...cut hours or let go? there is no reason to put up with this employee any longer, she obviously doesn't value her position there at your salon, and does not respect you or your wishes. She is not a good example to the other employees. I would fire her in a heartbeat. |
