Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Min wage is $7.55 here so not that different from $7.15 but either way a manager shouldnt be making min wage thats what our bed cleaners get for just cleaning the beds part time. i think your 10% commision will be really nice as i only get 4% when i hit certain goals, so if i dont make my goals i dont make any commision.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Minimum wage is for people with ZERO skills. The bare minimum.

You shouldn't be shooting for bare minimum.

Thats the way it should be. IMO, anyone who is on commision should have a goal and compensated only if the goal is reached. The goal of goals is to increase sales from prior periods.

If I don't make any sales I don't get paid at all.

It sounds to me that you should open your own business! I would hire you in a heartbeat and you should be getting paid salary plus commission.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

I agree. The trouble with this question is that the majority of tanning salons are owner operated, and there is no real "market compensation standard" like there are for B.A.s and M.B.A.s who go to work for more traditional firms. I suppose this position would be considered more of a supervisory position with some administrative duties included, which might rate an average of 12 to 18 dollars per hour, with some perks perhaps.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Given the fact that you're simply on this site learning the trade shows more ambition than 90% of salon managers out there. You should be earning more than $8 an hour. At least $10/hr plus some form of commission, to start. 10% on product is good, but I would never pay you 10% on tanning packages. I pay up to 4% commission on some packages. If you don't get $10, move to FL and I'll hire you next year.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

For the original poster.

Management is a salary position. If you are managing and making an hourly wage and not getting paid to handle problems in your off time then you are getting ripped off. You should be making salary otherwise you are just an employee with a fancy title.

You should be managing all aspects of the salon and getting compensated for it.

Your current wage brings in about $16,000.00 a year before taxes and that is if you work 40 hours a week. Management should be on salary and that is to be able to stay late when needed and handle extra problems in off time and also be able to take time off and still make your salary since you are there when you are needed as the $h!t hits the fan and entitled to take a little time when things are going smooth.

You delegate to the employees under you leaving time to make sure all of the other things are taken care of.

Management positions should be starting at $20,000.00 to $25,000.00 as there is a lot more responsibility to the job and you have to make yourself available to handle problems when they arise so it commands a higher pay.

It is time to ask for the pay you deserve or you move on.
