Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Better off, TELL THEM how you came up with this idea to MAKE THEM MORE MONEY and you'll prove it to them for a mere 10%.

As an OWNER myself, I can tell you that I'm ALL ABOUT someone making me more money...asking for more money will get you a one way ticket to the CURB BABY!

There is always someone who will come along to do your job better, investing less time and for less money. In other words - We can ALL be replaced.
This advice is excellent.

Has business increased since your employment? Show those numbers as well if you have them.

Also, ask yourself if the salon could sustain an increase in wages for you? How much do you know about the outgoing mo. expenses of the salon?

There is a whole bigger picture to consider.

Sounds like you do a lot to. The commision would be a great option to entertain, if you are strong in sales- which you should be.

Yes sales have increased, but there is nothing to compare it to because we opened less then a year ago and I started working here a month before they opened. I set the entire salon up and set up the grand opening. The owners are always praising me and telling me what an amazing job I am doing. They've told me the salon would not be where it is if not for me. I've also been told by the owners that I would be getting a raise since the day i started, but whenever we start discussing the issue the the subject gets quickly changed. I make 80% of the sales in the salon. I do the books and write out all the checks for all the bills in the salon. There is room for a wage increase, but I don't want to step on anyones toes. I love my job, it's just hard to pay rent and the bills with my pay.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

See, you are talking about day to day work load as if it's "above and beyond". It's really not. You are doing what you are paid to do and it hasn't even been a year and you are looking for a raise.

That's not reality I'm afraid.

If in fact you do go over numbers and the salon is not up to their "expectations" will you be willing to take a pay cut?

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Honestly, I think the job of a manager deserves more than $8 an hour. That's not much more than minimum wage.

An assistant manager with about half of your responsibilities should make $8-$8.50/hr plus commission in my opinion.

You do all the responsibilities of an actual owner except have the burden of putting your own money into the company. That, in my opinion is worth at least $12 an hour, unless you're on commission, then maybe $10 plus 10% commission.

But, you have to step into their shoes for a minute. In the first year of business, they're most likely having to put money in to keep the doors open in slow season. Probably for the first few years. And, unless they've just got $100,000 laying around to put in for the slow seasons, it's probably a struggle right now.

They're probably also anticipating a bad fiscal year, like the rest of the country is. So, right now may not be the time to ask.

For any Manager which I see you aren't because then I don't beleive you would have even made this comment, daily hustle should be a given. Yes, I do run around, take care of customers, mop floors, do laundry, dust, clean everything, clean beds, and everything and anything else that needs to be done. I even personally pick up lotion orders from our lotion distributor whenever needed, and do the salon shopping from laundry detergent, to cleaning supplies, to bed parts and wheatever else is needed.

Smile Re: What should I be getting Paid??

Wendy, you are right. I think you are the first person that made any sense. I know they did take out 2 loans to open the salon. Like I've said I take care of all the bills, and we have paid our biggest loan completely off already. We were able to pay off that loan withing 6 months of opening (which I believe to be impressive considering the summer was on the slower side). I've also paid 1/2 of the second loan off so far. Anytime the salon has struggled I've set up 1 day events that pull us through the month.

I took some of everyone's advise and talked to the owners. There are two owners and they have split opinions. I am happy to say we came to an agreement that works very well. I will be getting 10% commission now and in three months once the second loan is paid off I will be getting a nice wage increase. I guess my hard work is going to pay off.

Re: What should I be getting Paid??

I'm an owner friend. And it seems that you took my advice with the commission deal. Should work out fine for ya if you are for real.

I never said the day to day work is above and beyond. I'm not sure where you got that from. I believe me spending my free time going to business's promoting the salon is above and beyond. I believe me not visiting my father in the hospital because the salon needed me is above and beyond. I believe me getting the local newspaper to cover our grand opening is above and beyond. And there is much more I do that I believe to be above and beyond. Moping, cleaning, dusting, payroll, meetings, customer service and all that is my job and not above and beyond.

And I believe you said if I go over numbers and the salon is not up to their "expectations" will I be taking a pay cut. Well, as a good Manager that would not happen. Even in the summer when our number were not great I set up a 1 day event that brought our numbers way above. where they needed to be. (that's how there large loan got paid off)

In all reality a true salon manager should be at $12 minimum.
My experienced staff is at $8 plus commissions and performance bonuses. In season, that's worth $11-12.

In the new Obama Economy, I suggest you focus on how to make the owners more profit for your continued job security. Become a more valued employee, too valuable to lose.

Your owners, like I, probably consider themselves to be the managers (regardless of your title.)
