Higher Hourly, Or Higher Commission?

I am an employee at a salon, and I have been for about two years. I try my hardest to keep my sales high, and for the most part I do. During busy season, between my commission and my hourly pay, I average $15 an hour.

During slow season, with my commission and my hourly pay, I average about $9-$10.

We only receive commission on bottles of lotion, and that is 10%. Hourly pay is close to minimum wage. Commission is cash.

If you were the owners of my salon, what would you say if I asked...

To raise my hourly pay by $1, and cut my commission [not entirely!]. Where as other employees commission starts after $100, I would have to hit $1000 before my commission would start.

The only reason I would like to do this is because even though I would not truly be making more money, I would feel like I was receiving more money because my pay would be more consistent.

AND if for some reason I don't hit $1,000, then they are not losing any money paying me commission? :)

Re: Higher Hourly, Or Higher Commission?

I would think that higher commission would be more fair since tanning is such a seasonal business. If you are a good salesperson, then you have the chance to make a lot more with commission, than with reg. pay raise.

Also....if the salon is paying you high commission as opposed to hourly....during the slow months you are not risking getting your hours cut to minimize expences.

If your salon offers HP you can ask the owner commission on that too. Say...$1 for every customer you put in the HP. Do 20 a day....the salon will make more and so will you.

Re: Higher Hourly, Or Higher Commission?

My only dilemma is I can get my commission anywhere from the 1st of the month to the 15th and even though I end up making more money, I have a hard time counting on it for bills. And I have a few of those.
