Salon Management

I need advice regarding getting the girls to do what I want them to do when I am not in the salon. We have computer trackers (Helios reports and Excel sheets) as far as selling lotion we do not offer commission but we do offer free lotion for the employees and tanning privileges. We also have cleaning charts to be completed and initialed in down time and opening/closing checklists.

I have one employee that after 5 months of working still just doesn't get it. I don't know how much easier I can make it for them as far as writing everything out in to a checklist. I open every morning and it seems that atleast 3-4 things on the checklist are not completed and that she was on AIM/Facebook all night. I think I would not mind as much, if we were so busy that she could not get to anything or if she had stellar product sales.

I have threatened to cut her hours but every time she begs and says I promise to change, I need the money very badly etc etc. It is to the point that I do not want to fire her because she is a nice girl, she just flakes out repeatedly.

What can I do?

Re: Salon Management

I would suggest blocking most of those types of websites so your employees can not get on them at all. After so many times of correcting her, she knows that she can keep getting away with it becasue you are allowing her to. Sit her down and let her know final warning, no exceptions.
Have you implemented a disciplinary procedure? If not, you may want to. Example: First is a verbal warning, 2nd is a written warning, 3rd is suspension or termination or taking priveleges away. These are just a few ideas.

She is not an asset, she is a liability.

Rid your business of the blood sucking pest.

If you keep catering to your employees, you won't have to do much, you will be out of business.

She doesn't 'flake out repeatedly' she's just lazy. She keeps doing it because you keep letting her. Put her on written notice & probation for the next 30 days, cut her hours & let her know you mean business.
I've had the same issues with employees & I'm tired of it. Making up new applications, questions, probation periods, rules, check lists, etc to cover my butt. I wish we could withhold pay when they don't do their jobs.
You can be fired at other companies using the internet for personal reasons during business work hrs-same should go for salons. To me it's stealing time because they are getting paid & not doing their job.

Re: Salon Management

I'd get rid of the internet ASAP. I'd be afraid of getting viruses and potentially losing everything you have on your computer for your business. Do you have an employee handbook? If you don't make one up and be crystal clear about your rules. Bending a little is fine every now and then, but you can't make it a constant habit. I'd kick her butt to the curb. Cut your loses now, hire someone better and train them while it is slow season and you have the time to do it right. Knock on wood we have great employees. They are constantly coming up with specials and giving us great feedback. They get on their hands and knees and clean, wash dishes, dust...they just don't clean the toilet. If you chose to keep her, you should think about doing random stops into the salon during her shift to keep her on her toes. If something is wrong correct her on the spot and watch her. I'd put her on additional probation for 30 days as suggested, take away her free tanning & lotions. If she doesn't like it, she'll find her way out the door.

If you have told her over and over again, don't waist your breath, let her go.

I agree!!!! and probation means if anything is not done to compony policy shes gone! I always tell my girls...you are not scheduled till 9pm you are scheduled till close! I cant leave the salon when my jobs not done and you can;t either. I would also do inspections on her closes....like come in when she is closing and monitor her. you could do an employee evaluation too!

Re: Salon Management

you can think about taking her free tanning for 30 days also and make her pay we did that to an employee who kept coming in late...let me tell you how fast her **** came together. she hated to pay to tan when everyone else got it for free and the other employees also understood....NO MORE BULLSH*T!!!!!!!!!
