Employees quitting over manager

Hello I am brand new here! I have owner my current salon for almost 8 years. Anyway I just partnered with my good friend to purchase three salons in southern California. We a hired a manager for one salon I thought was professional and a hard worker so on and so on. Well after that the girls that had worked there before started to give notice one by one. I asked why and most would say "do to school starting up" and one girl told me she did not like the way I ran the salon and ran my management. I was shocked because I am all about treating my employees with respect and I made that and all my policies very clear to the women we hired as manager. Now I just hired a new girl today and she e-mails me to say that the manager (we will call her Lilly) was treating her poorly and told her she would be fired if she got any heavier. I was shocked and appalled, I really do not know what to do. I have never been in this position, I am really wondering what she is saying to these girls.

There is no law preventing you from recording any audio in the salon at the desk. There are more than a few retails chains that do this. So if you REALLY want to know, you could set up a recorder. I am sure if you approach her she will deny it. Either that or the employee was lying.

I don't plan on taking her to court, I just need to know if I should let her go or not. I talked to her about two hours ago, she told me that she didn't like the girls I was hiring and that they were "prettier than her" amongst other things. I am slowly finding out that she is not very sane, I know what I have to do...it's just been so crazy.

Well, yes and no.

If you live in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania or Washington it cant be used.

Anywhere else it can but that would be crazy to take something like that to court!

^ LOL good one CTM. It does sound like the employee has self-esteem issues. If she's a hard worker I would keep her and give her more guidance until she feels more confident and secure. You might end up with your best employee.

That's what I was thinking. If the employees feel she is creating a negative environment for them, the customers could be feeling the same way.

Do you have cameras? I'd be watching her interactions with people. Or maybe work a shift with her to see how she is running the place and correct any mistakes as they happen.

Re: Employees quitting over manager

I met with (Lilly) in person today at the salon. I talked with her a little bit and then she left for her lunch break. So I talked with the girls up front and asked if every thing was ok and how everything was going, one of the girls said that our morning girl quit. I was so mad, but kept my cool and called up the girl and I knew what was coming. She said that (Lilly) told her she was not good enough for sales/desk duty and that she was demoted to bed cleaner. DEMOTED? I hired this girl personally with 2 years of sales and salon experience and the customers have raved about her. So I talked to Lilly about an hour ago and confronted her, well guess what? She quit.
