Rep Power: 19 | Not too sure what to do? OK salon owners I need a little bit of help, please. I did a search but couldn't find asnwers to my questions. I just had an employee ask me for a raise for the first time. I'm not exactly sure how to handle this. I don't know if she really deserves a raise. How do you guys go about evaluating your employees to decide whether or not to give them a raise? And if you give them a raise how much do you give them? I've heard of some places doing a 2% raise or $0.50 a year or every six months. Can you guys please help me out here!!! |

It totally depends on what responsibilities she is given and if she always does them thoroughly and if she goes above and beyond to make your store better. Every six months, I do performance reviews with all my employees. And if he/she has been doing consistantly well, we would negotiate a small raise or some kind of bonus in addition to his/her regular commission.

Rep Power: 19 | Re: Not too sure what to do? I don't think .50 a year is insulting to an 18 year old. Sure, it would be to someone middle-aged, but to a high school or college student that is working for barely above minimum wage, I don't think they would be insulted. If they're only making $7.00 an hour a 5% increasde would be .35. A lot of large corporations give 5% raises each year.

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Not too sure what to do? I give raises in .50 increments. I have a business to run take the .50 or leave it. The first raise i give you is being on commission, so i really usually get by without giving a real raise for a year. |

Rep Power: 28 | Re: Not too sure what to do? I usually hire $1 less (mind you I start mine at $8 here) than I intend on paying sales staff (usually $9-$10 here.) After working 60 days of working support only, (to master that) they are trained on the sales end and their pay goes up $1 and they are able to collect commission. From there it usually will go up about $1.00 yearly or tweaking their commission to a higher percentage if they really sell well.
