Rep Power: 0 | Trouble estmating Monthly labor costs Hello to all! This website has to be the greatest asset out there to a up and coming salon owner. I've spent the last several weeks just reading and documenting all the great info. Who better to take advice from than actual people living it everyday!! I know you get frustrated when people post questions that have been asked in a thousand other posts but I have had some problems finding any infomation on Labor statistics. I'm aware that every month will be different but looking for some averages and even annual stats. I'm looking to open a seven or eight bed midscale salon. Hours of operation: Monday-Friday 8am-9pm Sat & Sun 8am-6pm The plan is to have my girlfriend manage daily operations and handle all outside sales and marketing. First of all, is this realistic and manageable for her? Or should I plan on hiring another position to handle one or the other? Also, roughly how many employee hours will a salon of this size rack up? I know this is speculative and dependant on the sucess of the business but I was hoping for some rough numbers. Also, approximate number of part time employees on staff? I have a good idea of hourly wages based on my market. Thanks so much and I appreciate any feedback! |

Because you two need to have a very strong relationship and bond because you both with have a lot of stress during the first few years. And disagreements will arise, so you need to think about how that will go over in your relationship outside of work. Strongly think about this!!!! My husband and I did our salon together and we also have another business. It was difficult, we got through it yet I could see it being easy to walk away from someone not completely tied to the other person. If that makes any sense to you. I think that one person could handle those tasks that you listed above and that you should not hire someone else. Just wondering why you will not be working the salon? And how many hours a week do you plan on your manager/girlfriend working? On a salon of this size you probably will not need more then 1 person during the daytime shift. However, in the evenings when schools let out and people start getting off of work you will need one person for just the front and then 1 perosn for bed cleanign only. This is for the busy season. During the non-busy season we just have 1 person working. We have a salon similiar to what you are discribing, as well. That is what I am basing my info on. I hope this helps a little! |

The hours, the decisions, the finances, etc. will drive a wedge between you and often times you will just want to go your separate ways. Be prepared for a rough ride. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Trouble estmating Monthly labor costs I never see my husband. I think labor costs depends on what you plan on paying her. Does she expect a certain amount? Is she willing to work all day everyday at the salon (which she will need to to get it up and running)? Or does she expect to work less than 40 hours? Depends on how busy you salon will be. I only have 2 girls that work, I work evenings and weekeneds. We work one girl at a time. Not much to be done before or after the salon closes (they can do it during slow times and I can do it myself). |
